1920 – Elcik History

It is 1920, and ten years later John P. Elcik, Sr. is still working at the woolen mill, now employed as a wool dyer. Mary is listed as a resident alien, and neither John nor Mary speaks, reads, or writes English.

The Elcik family is living on Goddard Street in Lisbon, Maine. By this time, all seven of the Elcik children have been born.

John Elcik, Jr., age 20, is now the head of his own household. He is married and rents a home on Goddard Street in Lisbon. His wife, Mary G. _____, is 19 years old. John works as a laborer in construction and is noted as a hard worker.

Michael Elcik, age 22, is living with the family on Goddard Street. He is employed as an oiler in a paper mill.

Andrew Elcik, age 18, is no longer attending school but can read and write. He is working as a truller in a woolen mill.

Annie and Elizabeth, both age 14, are attending school and can speak, read, and write English.

Susie, age 9, was born shortly after the 1910 census.

John Elcik [Ilcik] was born in Slovakia around 1887 and immigrated to America in 1906. {Ellis Island} Mary Jonek was born in Slovakia around 1888.

1920

In 1920, John Ilcik was 33 years old and married to 32-year-old Mary. The Ilcik family lived in Durham, Maine. They worked hard and already owned their home. {talk about this}

John was a resident alien and worked as a laborer in a paper mill. Mary was also a resident alien. Although her native language was Slovak, she could speak, read, and write English. She completed elementary school through the 8th grade.

They had three children: Joseph Elcik (age 12), Andrew Elcik (age 8), and George Elcik (age 4). Another child, Mary J. Elcik, Jr., was on the way and would be born around the time the 1920 census was taken.
