Updating the 2008 Family Tree

Pam, Jim, Jeff, J.P., and Michelle,

My project to update the 2008 Family Tree is proceeding nicely. The Family tree now has 2,116 people, 1,130 photos, and 121 stories with 2,535 records. In addition to reaching out to you, I have been using Facebook and email to communicate with Beth Gamache and Janet (Lucas) Welsh). Beth is my cousin, Jack’s wife, and Janet also is my cousin. Both live in Maine.

There are five documents that I think are interesting, so I’m asking you to read and share them with the kids and their spouses. I have yet to add Duryea, Grap, McMahon, or Portal surnames. I would do so if I get some data from the family. Minimally, I need birthdates for grand-parents and the maiden names of the wives. Pictures are always welcome.

The focus for me began with the Elcik and McClanahan surnames. I have added Adams, Brekke, Byrus, DeRosa, Duryea, Gamache, Gruhl, Jorgenson, Karkos, Kashmer, Skillin, and Strand to get to where I am today.

Technically, this is a never-ending project, but I will let this wind down soon. If you wish to view the Family Tree or contribute or need me to resend the invitation to access, let me know.

Back in 2008, I worked on a family tree called “My Cousins” that was useful then. I have a new updated version that is nearing a stopping point. It will never be “completed.”

You may already have your own resources dedicated to this, but even so, this could be helpful. I also would love to gain access to anything you would like to see put into the family tree. I am using the tree to build a Family history so many of my images, documents, and website links are a bit unconventional. I use the tree to tell family LifeStory’s. ?

Are you interested in having your own copy of my version of the Family tree? If so, the following FREE options exist for using a copy of the tree.

The typical approach is to ask for a GEDCOM file. I can provide a file in this format and it can be used with virtually any ancestry or genealogy software. The file is free.

It is not the way I recommend you go because GEDCOM FILES are text-only files. The downloads do not contain photos and other documents. I have attached a link below that explains more about GEDCOM files.

There are two outside companies that sync to Ancestry. When the files are synced, they will retain photos and documents. The companies which sync with Ancestry are Family Tree Maker 2019 and RootsMagic.

If you want a GEDCOM or Family Tree Maker backup, send your request with an email address for delivery. The files are free. You will need a software program to use them.

The tree includes familiar surnames: Adams, Elcik (Elick, Elsik, Ilcik), Gamache, McClanahan, Lucas, Skillin, and Strand. I am willing to ADD additional surnames to the tree. To get started I typically need the dates of birth and full names of grandparents (maiden names for women).

Also, I’m willing to help other family members with their trees. I think it is important to update older trees to include sources, images, and web links. As Genealogist’s say, “A Tree without Sources is Mythology.”

Having excellent medical care is one of the perks of this day and age.  We are lucky! 
 
Really, you didn’t misunderstand anything. It was my mistake in the earlier email. I didn’t provide enough information. Elizabeth Mae (Chute) Adams is sharing information that her sister Sylvia “Sally” (Wentworth) Adams collected before she died.  Thus, we have no way of following up to ask where Sally came by this information about St. Cyril’s Cemetery. What perplexes me most is the detail. She provides burial dates. I rarely get those. The death date is all I normally get. Also, there is some logic in thinking John, Jr. would be in the same cemetery as his father.  If Junior is there, why not Senior?  
 
Beth, I didn’t realize that the cemetery is so small that you would have been able to walk it.  Could this reinforce my theory about John, Sr. being one of the first buried and that his location was not recorded or lost?  Is there a caretaker/historian for the Cemetery? Someone to talk to would be nice if that is an option.
 
I am thrilled for Nancy and Larry.  I will wait for the holidays to be over before asking Nancy about the family items she has offered to send. They deserve to relax, just as much as we do. By then, I hope to have scanned what Jeff has sent me that touches on her and Larry’s life together.  I think she will be surprised and hopefully pleased.

Beth Gamache and her friend Earl at the Historical Society have located the gravesite of my Great-grandparents.  The search at Saint Cyril Cemetery was initiated because of a document from Sally (Wentworth) Adams that said that they would be found in the Saint Cyril Cemetery in Lisbon Falls. She also provided us with burial dates to complement their dates of death. Earl credits these dates as being important clues.
Earl traveled to Lewiston to find the Church records and then saw to it that a photo of the gravesite and John P. Elcik (Sr.’s) obituary is posted now at FindAGrave.  See:  https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/220993637/john-p-elcik
The gravestone identifies the correct name and spelling of my Great-grandmothers’s name as Maria Anna Pelcarsky. This is a correction from Mary to Maria Anna and a confirmation of spelling for Pelcarsky.
It is historically interesting in John, Sr.’s Obituary that his parents are identified as Mr. & Mrs. John Elcik. It suggests a research question as to whether he is John Sr. or John Jr. If the latter is true, all generations of John Paul Elcik are off by one generation. This would make me the 5th and my son the 6th generation. It is a moot point but interesting to speculate.
The email correspondence between Beth, Earl, and I will be included in the MyCousins eBook.  Beth and I are still planning on a May 3rd publish date.
