Updating the 2008 Family Tree

Wed 7/29/2020 10:43 AM

Pam, Jim, Jeff, J.P., and Michelle,

My project to update the 2008 Family Tree is proceeding nicely. The Family tree now has 2,116 people, 1,130 photos, and 121 stories with 2,535 records. In addition to reaching out to you, I have been using Facebook and email to communicate with Beth Gamache and Janet (Lucas) Welsh). Beth is my cousin, Jack’s wife, and Janet also is my cousin. Both live in Maine.

There are five documents that I think are interesting, so I’m asking you to read and share them with the kids and their spouses. I have yet to add Duryea, Grap, McMahon, or Portal surnames. I would do so if I get some data from the family. Minimally, I need birthdates for grand-parents and the maiden names of the wives. Pictures are always welcome.

The focus for me began with the Elcik and McClanahan surnames. I have added Adams, Brekke, Byrus, DeRosa, Duryea, Gamache, Gruhl, Jorgenson, Karkos, Kashmer, Skillin, and Strand to get to where I am today.

Technically, this is a never-ending project, but I will let this wind down soon. If you wish to view the Family Tree or contribute or need me to resend the invitation to access, let me know.

Stacey and Lauren,

Back in 2008, I worked on a family tree called “My Cousins” that was useful then. I have a new updated version that is nearing a stopping point. It will never be “completed.”

You may already have your own resources dedicated to this, but even so, this could be helpful. I also would love to gain access to anything you would like to see put into the family tree. I am using the tree to build a Family history so many of my images, documents, and website links are a bit unconventional. I use the tree to tell family LifeStory’s. ?

Are you interested in having your own copy of my version of the Family tree? If so, the following FREE options exist for using a copy of the tree.

The typical approach is to ask for a GEDCOM file. I can provide a file in this format and it can be used with virtually any ancestry or genealogy software. The file is free.

It is not the way I recommend you go because GEDCOM FILES are text-only files. The downloads do not contain photos and other documents. I have attached a link below that explains more about GEDCOM files.

https://support.ancestry.com/s/article/Moving-Trees-Between-Accounts

There are two outside companies that sync to Ancestry. When the files are synced, they will retain photos and documents. The companies which sync with Ancestry are Family Tree Maker 2019 and RootsMagic.

I have elected to use Family Tree Maker 2019 by Mackiev. Here is a link to Mackiev Live Chat: https://www.mackiev.com/techsupport/ftm/livechat.html

If you want a GEDCOM or Family Tree Maker backup, send your request with an email address for delivery. The files are free. You will need a software program to use them.

The tree includes familiar surnames: Adams, Elcik (Elick, Elsik, Ilcik), Gamache, McClanahan, Lucas, Skillin, and Strand. I am willing to ADD additional surnames to the tree. To get started I typically need the dates of birth and full names of grandparents (maiden names for women).

Also, I’m willing to help other family members with their trees. I think it is important to update older trees to include sources, images, and web links. As Genealogist’s say, “A Tree without Sources is Mythology.”

Uncle John

P.S. The other family tree option is a FREE guest account at Ancestry.com. You will be able to view records but not change them. This too requires an email address.

P.P.S. Please forward this email to anyone you feel could be interested in sharing info or gaining access.

Which Surname is Most Represented on the Family Tree?

Sun, Aug 16, 2020, at 2:03 PM

Beth,

The attached spreadsheet has separate worksheets for many of the surnames in the family tree. Which surname is the most represented? The Skillin family (my Mom’s family) has that honor. While the McClanahan family (Pam’s father) is tiny.

Each tab also has the number of persons in the worksheet.

Does this interest you?

Our “My Cousins” eBook

Sun 10/11/2020 8:22 AM

Dear Family,

The conversations I have had these months with you and others are precious to me, so I am reaching out to you today with a small request.

I want future generations to enjoy the experience I’ve had researching our family connections. To accomplish this, I am working with Beth Gamache to turn our conversations into a private eBook called My Cousins for family members only.

As a member of our family, I would like you to do something easy-to-do.

Would you please write a 2-3 sentence descriptive profile of yourself for other family members to read in the eBook?  That and a current picture would be most helpful.

Here is my profile as an example.
Dr. John P. Elcik, IV is married to Pamela McClanahan and they have two children: J.P. and Michelle. John is retired from a marketing career in Higher Education. His interests include child advocacy (as a Mason and Shriner); animal rescue, education (especially eLearning), mysteries, and science fiction.
Naturally, if you have pictures or Life Stories you want us to include, we would be most grateful to receive them.  You may also submit profiles and pictures of other family members who are not eBook contributors. Everyone is welcome to be included. Send me an email, and you may also become a contributor. ?

We will course make sure you are sent an invitation to read the eBook when complete.  The family tree, pictures, and documentation will also be put on a flash drive. It, too, will be available to you, and as a contributor, it will be yours for FREE.

I do believe that this is a worthwhile project and will be a positive experience for you.  Please join Beth and me.

What do you think?  Can we count on you?

Status Updates

Sun 11/29/2020 1:17 AM
Beth,
First, I wish you were busy for reasons of fun.  Hospitals don’t qualify. You and Jack have had more than your fair share of visits there. No more, please.
The search for the gravesite shouldn’t be a concern of yours right now.
When you are ready, I thought you might act on Elizabeth Chute’s information that they both were buried three days after their deaths at St. Cyril’s Cemetery. John on 27 MAY 1941 and Mary 26 AUG 1936. I should have clarified just how specific her information was. I know that John Sr. and Mary are not in the online database for St. Cyril’s, but I hope you might find someone there to ask if there are individuals who don’t make the online lists. Another possibility is to ask if there could be a gap in their records? This might have been close to their beginnings as a cemetery. Sometimes early records can be problematic.
Finally, I am still sorting the treasure trove of items that Jeff sent me.  In addition to the items mentioned in my last email, I now have my father’s and my original birth certificates. And as a teaser, I have found more Gamache family items. Some are specific to Nancy.  I haven’t heard from her yet. I hope all is well and that they are getting their real estate property back soon.
Both Pam and I are doing DNA testing as our family’s paternal histories (Elcik/McClanahan) stop after the 5th generation.  On the maternal side (Skillin/Strand), the family tree is significantly extended beyond the 5th generation.
I have ordered a slide scanner to make digitalizing the 600 slides possible.  My workload is growing. Setting up the printer that will scan 500 photos is being delayed till after the holidays. My office needs reorganizing to make room for the printer and scanner.
Bless both you and Jack; please be safe and enjoy the holidays.

The Ancestry.com Project

Tue 11/17/2020 6:05 PM

Jeff,

I’m almost ready to publish on a flash drive the “MyCousins” Family Tree with a companion eBook and supporting documents, images, and photos.  You and each of your boys will get a copy as a gift from Pam and me.

Before I send out copies of the drive, I wonder if you have time to assemble and ship the documents and photos you wanted to share.  There should be time for me to curate them before I go to press if you can do this soon.  This reminds me of one of my favorite poems.

Patience is a virtue,
catch it if you can.
Seldom in a woman,
never in a man.

Lol…

Also, FYI, I asked the Del Moral, Duryea, Flickinger, Grap, McClanahan, and Portell families to provide me with data on their parents, i.e., 1 generation so that I could use my 3-month subscription to US Discovery on their Surnames. I have data on Susie (expert researcher that I am).

hope all is going especially well for you, Harry, Max, and Sam.  You are all included in my prayers.

Love,

John, IV
