George Burton Strand 1905–1999

George Burton Strand, age 93, of Shelbyville, Indiana, passed away on February 15, 1999, at Major Hospital. A lifelong engineer, educator, and devoted family man, George lived a life marked by professional excellence, civic involvement, and quiet pride in his family.

George was born on April 14, 1905, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of John Carl Strand and Sophia Kaspara (Hendrickson) Strand. He pursued higher education at the Illinois Institute of Technology, laying the foundation for a distinguished career in electrical engineering.

For forty-five years, George worked as an electrical engineer for Western Electric Company, retiring in 1970. He continued his professional life at Butler University, where he worked for ten years from 1970 to 1980.

George was an active member of Northminster Presbyterian Church and participated in numerous fraternal and professional organizations, including the Murat Shrine, Scottish Rite (Valley of Indianapolis), Keystone Masonic Lodge No. 251, F.&A.M., Royal Order of Jesters, Murat Chanters, and the Telephone Pioneers of America.

He married Annarose DeRosa on December 31, 1927. She preceded him in death in 1985. Together, they built a life centered on family, commitment, and shared values.

Survivors include his daughters, Ruth McClanahan of Shelbyville and Karen Lawler of Indianapolis; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on February 17, 1999, at Washington Park North Great Hall Chapel in Indianapolis, with burial at Washington Park North Cemetery. Memorial contributions were directed to the Blue River Foundation – McClanahan Trust.
