John R. Lucas — 1944–2021

John R. “Pete” Lucas, of South Berwick, Maine, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, January 9, 2021, with his loving family at his side.

He was born in Lewiston, Maine, on April 3, 1944, the oldest son of John L. Lucas and Madeline R. (Elcik) Lucas.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Lorraine; two daughters, Cynthia Lucas Wolcott of Dover, New Hampshire, and Laurie Lucas of Malta, New York; and two grandsons, Alexander Wolcott of Reston, Virginia, and Andrew Wolcott of Dover, New Hampshire.

He is also survived by his siblings: Constance Akerley and her husband, Russell; Rodney Lucas and his wife, Rosemary; Christine Currier and her husband, Bryant; Janet Welch and her husband, James; L. Michael Lucas; and Sherilynn Lucas and her partner, Dave Dahlen. He was predeceased by his brother, Ronald Lucas, and is also survived by Ronald’s wife, Janis. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews who adored their Uncle Pete.

John had several careers, including purchaser at National Sea Products, builder, and painter. His favorite role was as co-proprietor of Lucas Sunoco in North Berwick, Maine, where he partnered with his brother Mike. He was never more exhausted—and never happier—than when running a business alongside his brother.

He deeply loved his grandsons and was a guiding force in their lives. He shared a love of fishing with Alexander, including memorable trips throughout Maine and New Hampshire and a once-in-a-lifetime journey to Alaska. With Andrew, he shared a love of sports and countless hours in the bleachers watching him play baseball, including a special trip to Cooperstown.

John understood the importance of family, a value instilled by his extraordinary parents. He was both protector and provider—watching over his wife and daughters with compassion, strength, and unwavering devotion. He wanted little for himself but everything for his family and was proud of his daughters not for what they achieved, but for who they became.

Most of all, John was loved by all who knew him. He possessed the rare gift of listening, understanding, and accepting people exactly as they were. He never spoke an unkind word and lived his life on his own terms. His quiet wit, genuine kindness, and beautiful soul remain in the hearts of all who knew him.

The family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff of Wentworth Hospice in Somersworth, New Hampshire, whose care, compassion, and support were invaluable during John’s final months.

Funeral services were held privately. A celebration of life will be held at a future date. Arrangements were assisted by Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home of York, Maine. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
