Carlton Desmond Fickett, age 75, of Monmouth, Maine, passed away on March 13, 2022. He was born on January 28, 1947, in Portland, Maine, the son of Carlton Scribner Fickett and Phyllis Isabelle (Reed) Fickett.
Carl grew up in Spurrs Corner in Otisfield and attended Casco High School as a member of the Class of 1965. Before completing his senior year, he chose to enlist in the United States Army, feeling called to serve his country during the Vietnam War. Following his honorable discharge, he continued his education through Adult Education at Oxford Hills SAD #17 in South Paris, where he earned his high school diploma.
Throughout his working life, Carl held many jobs, including logging, but his favorite work was driving heavy construction vehicles for Calvin Hunter at CC Construction in Auburn.
In January 2010, Carl met Sally Labree, whom he described as his soulmate. Together they settled in Monmouth, where Carl found renewed purpose and joy. He embraced life through music—playing guitar with friends—riding horses and four-wheelers, hunting “upta camp,” traveling, and deepening his faith.
Carl was predeceased by his parents; his sisters Shirley Hannaford Labbe, Myrna Menzel, Naida Skillins, and Winona; and his brother-in-law, Clayton Polland.
He is survived by his sister, Theva Stevens of Cobleskill, New York; five biological children; twenty nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. He shared especially close bonds with his niece Genise Polland Stern, his niece Naida Jean Stevens, his friends in the Monmouth community, his longtime classmates, and his beloved cat, Toot.
The family expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Veterans Administration at Togus, the staff at Sandy River Center in Farmington, and Androscoggin Hospice for their compassionate care.
A celebration of Carl’s life was planned with friends in the Monmouth area. Burial was held on Sunday, July 17, in the family lot at Elmwood Cemetery in Otisfield. Arrangements were under the care of Dan and Scott’s Cremation and Funeral Service of Farmington.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations were requested to the East Monmouth United Methodist Church.
