Edward Gruhl 1819–1904

Edward Gruhl, age 85, one of the oldest, best known, and most highly esteemed citizens of Hope, passed away at his home on Main Street in Hope at 1 o’clock in the morning.

Edward Gruhl was born on December 30, 1819, in Clywelia, Saxony County, Germany. In 1854, he emigrated to the United States and settled in Hope, where he would spend the remainder of his life.

For many years, Edward was engaged in the furniture business in Hope. He was also the first undertaker to conduct business in the town, a role that placed him in a position of trust and service within the community.

He was widely respected for his character and long-standing contributions to the town.

Edward is survived by two daughters and one son.

Services & Burial

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Romig from the Moravian Church in Hope at 2:50 o’clock on Sunday afternoon. Burial followed at the Moravian Cemetery.
