Eugene P. Elcik 1933–2024

Eugene P. Elcik, age 91, of Lisbon Falls, Maine, died on September 16, 2024, in Lewiston, Maine, with his wife of 67 years, Lorraine, by his side.

Gene was born on March 26, 1933, in Durham, Maine, the son of Andrew Elcik and Eugenie Elcik.

He proudly served as a veteran of the United States Air Force. Following his military service, Gene worked at the Worumbo Mill in Lisbon Falls before continuing his education. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Southern Maine.

Gene went on to work at the Brunswick Naval Air Station as a civilian Special Services Officer. In this role, he was responsible for managing the golf course and producing and overseeing entertainment and sports programs, including the first Naval District ski competitions.

He later obtained his real estate appraisal license and owned and operated a real estate appraisal firm.

Gene had a lifelong love of animals and served for several years as President of the Brunswick Area Humane Society. He worked tirelessly to advance animal welfare and helped develop the Department of Animal Welfare within the Maine Department of Agriculture.

He held memberships and certifications with the Golf Course Superintendents Association and the Amateur Athletic Union, qualifying him as a manager for various amateur sports programs.

An avid downhill skier, Gene was also a ski instructor and organized ski programs for the Brunswick Naval Air Station, teaching participants how to ski. Later in life, he found joy in painting oil landscapes and scenes.

Among his proudest accomplishments was becoming a published author later in life. He wrote and published ten fiction novels with a strong Maine flavor, spanning adventure, romance, crime, and drama.

Gene was predeceased by his parents; his brother and sister-in-law, Andrew and Barbara Elcik; and his nephew, Andrew Elcik Jr.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lorraine; his niece Sue Elcik and her wife, Lorrie Mitchell; his great-niece Meagan Desjardins and her husband Ralph; and their children.

At Gene’s request, there were no calling hours. A private graveside service will be held for family.

Memorial contributions in Gene’s memory may be made to the Brunswick Humane Society or to a Humane Society of one’s choice.
