Sarah Anne McMahon, age 17, a lifelong resident of Annapolis, Maryland, passed away on July 13, 2012, at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center following complications of leukemia.
Sarah was born on January 24, 1995, in Annapolis. She attended St. Anne’s School of Annapolis and St. Mary’s High School, where she had just completed her junior year with honors, all while courageously battling leukemia.
She was formerly employed as a crew member with Watermark Tours. Sarah had a love for Montana, David Archuleta, and Hawaii. She was SCUBA certified, held a boaters’ license, and deeply loved the outdoors, earning the affectionate nickname from her parents as “our little tree hugger.”
Sarah was a member of the photography club and the International Thespian Society (I.T.S.), and she was an active member of St. Mary’s High School’s Drama Department, serving as a stage manager.
Throughout her illness, Sarah was known for her strength, selflessness, and compassion. She consistently put others first, never complained, and never wavered in spirit.
She is survived by her parents, Dan and Debbie McMahon of Annapolis; her grandmothers, Patricia Harmon of Bel Air, Maryland, and Anne McMahon Shadid of Annapolis; and her great-grandmother, Eleanora McIntee of Bel Air.
Sarah is also survived by her aunt Susie Elcik, her husband Jeffrey, and their children; her uncle Glenn A. Merritt, his wife Gina, and their children; and her uncle Edward T. Harmon and his children.
Friends and family were received on Monday, July 16, 2012, at Taylor Funeral Home in Annapolis. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Annapolis. Interment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requested memorial donations in Sarah’s memory to the Johns Hopkins Hospital Pediatric Oncology Program at the Bloomberg Children’s Center.
