Beth,

Thanks for the kind words. But even more, thank you for all you do and have done.
I will keep in touch as I continue with the DNA and other projects. Mostly, I am not doing additional data entry on the tree. It is an endless task, anyway.  Someday, technology will be able to do it more efficiently.
I will send you an updated Flash drive when the eBook gets published. I’m still targeting May 3rd.  I only need one drive returned. And that only if you still have the stuff to send me. I believe my favorite gravesite photographer specializes in flowers?

A Data Entry Question

Wed, January 27, 2021, 4:20 AM

Beth,

A discussion item for us is how to do the data entry of the new names.

I would like to have it so that a query of Elcik in the List of All People gets all the Elcik’s.

At the same time, We now have variations in the name for:

  • American name
  • Baptismal name
  • Slovak name

I propose the following to get the sort right and keep the historical data as well.

Not only will the Elcik’s all appear using this strategy, but the variations will appear sorted at the end.

You can see what I mean by doing a sort on the MyCousins Tree.

What do you think?

Deeb

John,
Using the American surname for Ancestry would be easier (in my opinion) for people researching the Elcik family.  It certainly would be for me.  Also, the surname’s history is a wonderful idea and helps explain the difficulty of understanding birth certificates, marriages, etc.   If Deeb Keamy hadn’t made this discovery, we probably would never know this information.  A Life Story article would be very appropriate, and I’m happy you’re writing it as I wouldn’t know where to begin!!
A little history about Deeb: his mother is Marilyn Keamy.  Her maiden name was Karkos, and I originally contacted her about the Karkos family picture of the 10 children and the mother and father sitting in chairs in front of them.  She identified everyone with a little history of them.  She’s 93 and has an amazing memory, and has become a good friend of mine recently.  She mentioned contacting her son, Deeb, as he loves Ancestry and has resources that we obviously don’t have.  I mentioned that to Charlie, and he contacted him.  You know the rest of the story.  Deeb also belongs to the HS even though he lives in MD.  He’s retired now but worked in some capacity in Washington DC.  He grew up in Lisbon Falls and has 6 siblings.

John,

Now that we have new information from Deeb about the Elcik and Ilcik families, I spent last night moving people around in my Elcik and Gamache family trees.  As I was doing that, I realized we still don’t have a DNA connection to link the two families.  Before now, I was positive there was a connection, and now I’m sad to say, I don’t think there is, at least not an obvious one.  It just seems with the same surnames; there should be.  You asked are we missing something?  I’ve tried many times to answer that question and always come up with the same answer: sadly, NO.

What uncle are you talking about? Who ran cigarettes between FL and NY????

Beth,
It is Clyde Raymond Skillin, Jr., my mom’s brother.  He is also the subject of a poem written by his father that I shared a few days ago.
I once or twice claimed that I knew a hitman in the New York Mob. He wasn’t that person. Honestly, he wasn’t.

[My sense of humor was a little off this week.  Uncle Clyde was one of my favorite relatives. He introduced me to my wife, Pam.  He was largely responsible for my getting a job at Tri-State University, where all three of us recruited engineering students.]
