Which DNA Test Have We Taken? Why?

DNA testing has become an essential tool in modern genealogy,
but it is not a magic solution. Each test has strengths, limitations,
and costs. Before choosing a provider, we recommend starting with
an independent comparison of the major DNA testing kits.

Common DNA Testing Options

  • MyHeritage – Often the lowest-cost option and popular internationally
  • AncestryDNA – Best integrated with historical records and family trees
  • 23andMe – Strong on health and trait reporting
  • FamilyTreeDNA – Specialized tests for Y-DNA and mtDNA research

Which Tests Have We Taken?

Beth, Jack, John, JP, Michelle, and Pam have all taken the
AncestryDNA test. When possible, we recommend testing
with the same company where your primary family tree is maintained.

John has also taken the MyHeritage DNA test.
While the number of matches was large, only a few were close or extended family,
and deeper analysis often required a paid subscription.

Jeff tested with 23andMe, which excels at health and trait reporting
but is less useful for traditional genealogical research due to limited family trees.

A Shared Challenge

Across all DNA platforms, many matches are not linked to public family trees.
DNA without context is frustrating. A match without a tree is a clue without a map.

When DNA Gets Complicated

We maintain trees on multiple major platforms and are happy to help others
navigate DNA decisions. For suspected paternal-line connections between living men,
Y-DNA testing—especially the Y-111 test—can be highly effective,
though it is also expensive.
