Slovak Translations

Monday, September 21, 2020, 10:02 PM

John, IV,

I’m exchanging text messages with a cousin of Jack’s, Dan Gamache. He speaks Slovak and has interpreted some of the Slovak words on gravestones. He also knows a couple of people in the John Stephen Karkos photo. Joseph is the father of my good friend in high school, Pat Karkos. I knew him but didn’t recognize him in the picture because he was younger then. Also, two other men in the picture, Stephan and Andrew, were the fathers of two other Karkos families in Lisbon Falls. Stephan’s son was Steve Karkos, and I went to school with him, and Andrew’s son was Norm Karkos, and Jack went to school with him. Dan Gamache lived on the same street as all three Karkos families.

On the Ilcik gravestone, Rod is an abbreviation for born, Zom means died, Jeho Jenna means wife. Those words are on other gravestones as well. I always wondered what they meant, and now I know, and you do too.

John Paul Elcik, Jr.

Gang,

This is the information and photo I have for our Grandfather (Becky’s Great-grandfather).
I think I have that right. ?

Thanks to Beth, Jack, and Nancy I have the right photo.

My two brothers and I did not know “Zeda” married a second time to Helen Mosko. It was a second marriage for both. I would have been about 10 years old, Jim 8 years old and Jeff may or may not have been born yet.

Karkos Kronicles

Sat 9/26/2020 2:10 PM

Beth,

I’m taking a page from your side of our book and reaching out to Terry L. Karkos who I shared with you was the author of Karkos Kronicles, a Genealogy website that once existed and I liked it.

Terry has a Facebook account. Who knew? I didn’t. I sent him a copy of the 1910 Elcik Family photo asking if it would do in lieu of a “calling card.” I’ll let you know what happens. There are several references on his Facebook pages that he for a long time has been interested in starting the website back up. ?

If you wish, you should reach out too. We might make his whole year with our outreach. Tell him there is a rumor going around that he is going to update and republish Karkos Kronicles. If there isn’t. I’ll start one. Lol.

Hi John,

I get all confused when we send replies and the emails pile up. Just my little “pet peeve”.
I also have another “pet peeve”. When people are out walking, they don’t walk on the sidewalk but on the road. The glare from the sun sometimes, “hides” them. UGH!!!

OOOOHHH!! Your garage is some mess. Do your kids get after you guys??
My husband is a “hoarder” and I am constantly after him. He collects cars and I’m thankful we don’t have extra property. We would live like those hilly-billies on TV. I tell both his adult sons, (we did not have children together), that THEY have to clean the mess. NOT ME. I will take a photo soon.

Every weekend he washes ALL the cars.

John, I’m just soooo lazy since I retired 4.5 years ago, and getting worse. I need a fire, you know where!!!!

Trump 2020 YES…………

Cannot wait for the debates.

All the Best,

Judy

Elcik Family

Mon 9/28/2020 3:51 PM

Judy,

My wife Pam has over 1,000 unsorted emails, and it drives me so crazy that at least once a year, I try to help her get organized. I, on the other hand, am super organized with hundreds of folders and subfolders for email. Yes, I know there is a search tool, but I derive some perverse sense of accomplishment by keeping everything neatly organized.

I, too, would be concerned with people walking in the street. My similar pet peeve is bicycles on the sidewalk. It is dangerous. ? They sneak up on us, hearing impaired, old people, rather than ride so we could see them coming.

Your “hilly-billies” comment has me lol. Do you remember the TV show, Sanford and Son? Our personal version of their “junkyard” hubcaps on the backyard fence is the attached photo. Lol.

Our kids have grown up with the clutter and are immune to it. But Pam’s sister gets on her case. Before the virus, Kathy would spend 3 out of every 4 weeks cruising, just enough time so Pam could recover from her “mothering.” Occasionally, I do “threaten” to call the fire department (lol), which always improves things. Pam is very active with volunteer work, so the least I can do is be supportive.

Thankfully, the kid’s homes are more organized than us. My son J.P. is getting married to Ana, a kindergarten teacher, on November 1st. He, too, is a teacher (high school biology and math). They have bought a house about an hour away, and he is learning what homeownership means, i.e., cutting the grass, etc. I tease that he has moved to Canada. ? My daughter Michelle, who works at Walgreens, is an avid Disney fan, and her house, just 10 minutes away, is nicely decorated so she can display her collectibles. Kathy is about the same distance away. Having family close is a blessing.

Disney, our favorite vacation destination, is 3 hours away. Michelle and Pam will drive to and from Orlando for a day trip. The bottom line is that I’m the lazy one in the family. I encourage them to go without me. Dog sitting is my excuse. And it has been working.

I used to collect cars. Never real cars, just the diecast toys. I was the Director of Marketing for a software company misnamed CARS information systems. We had nothing to do with autos, but I decided to embrace the issue and used toy, diecast cars from Maisto as promotions. The customers loved it.

As for being lazy, it comes with retirement. My brother Jim just retired and sent me that quote about procrastination, how good it is. “It gives us something to do tomorrow and nothing to do today.” Of course, my response was that I like to say, “mañana” as it is the day that never comes. Lol.

Yes, the debates. I am ready.
