Aunt Gertrude’s Letter

Sat, August 1, 2020, at 4:51 AM

Beth,

I’ve pieced together a part of the backstory of Aunt Gertrude’s letter dated April 24, 1961.

She is talking about Helen B. Mosko, her new stepmother. Helen and John Jr. were married on September 1, 1959.

John P Elcik, Jr. and Helen B. Mosko saw their spouses pass away (John in 1951 and Helen in 1953).

Helen lives five more years after John, Jr. died on March 31, 1963.

I think it is interesting that Helen speaks mostly Slovak. Aunt Gertrude says she likes her but can’t get herself to call her mother.

My Dad, in his papers, also shares the information that Helen is a naturalized citizen. Naturalization Certificate Number is 637181 issued at Bath, Maine, October 10, 1917. Both he and Aunt Gertrude reference the same Certificate number.

What is still a mystery for me is the reference to checks. I also don’t know who Auntie Gertrude writes this letter. Who would she call kids?

What do you think?

John, IV

P.S. I also am at a loss as to why my father did not acknowledge Helen’s existence when I asked him in a 2008 letter.

YES, I saw this video. The video was taken at our house. Tom & Diana Gardner brought your dad and Wanda to Maine, and we had them at our home for lobster. Jack’s father and Uncle Richard were here for a wonderful visit. I remember it well as I loved your dad and Uncle Richard. The video brought tears to my eyes and lots of emotions. WOW, thank you for this…..

Gravestone Question

John,

I know it is his grave because this info provided below is true: He was born in Czechoslovakia, the son of Paul and Mary Elcik, the former Mary Jonek, whom he married in 1905.

He came to the United States 58 years ago.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary, who died in 1951.

Survived by four sons Joseph of Brooklyn, NY; George of Lisbon Falls, ME; Andrew of Corona, NY; Michael of Miami, FL; a daughter Mrs. Mary King of Westville, NH; a brother Paul of Lisbon Falls, ME. It is my great-grandfather, not great-great-grandfather.

John – The pictures come with a friend request from your 1rst cousin John Elcik, IV. I hope you enjoy the photos.

Mark – Thank you for the pictures of dad next to his cruiser and him in uniform, black and white. I have, but I hadn’t seen the other one before. Life is going by at a high rate of speed. It’s nice to hear from you.

John – I agree. I’m retired, and with the extra time on my hands, I’ve been working on the family tree. I have been communicating with Beth and Janet. Beth is working with me on some of this. If you decide you are interested, I can provide you access to Ancestry.com. I need an email address for you to make an invitation.

Mark – MarkLcheck@yahoo.com

John – I see you like to fish! It looks like a lot of fun. I have a friend here who takes me fishing. I go to be sociable. I’m not very good at it. ?

Mark – Our grandfather was an unbelievable fisherman. He spent lots of time at it.

John – I didn’t know that.

John – I’m written some documents that you may find of interest. I’ll send you the one on why we spell our name Elcik.

John – I’ll try not to disturb your tranquil life, but maybe I can entertain you with some of my findings.

John – You can always reach me on Facebook or at johnelcik@msn.com.

Mark – Excellent.

John – Have you seen the video of your dad and mine singing Slovak nursery rhymes? The video is a huge file.

Mark – Awesome that last time I spoke to Uncle was when Auntie Gertrude passed away.

John – We loved watching it here. Pam (my wife), J.P. (son), and Michelle (daughter).

Mark – I haven’t seen the video lol.

John – I’ll find a way to send you a link. The file is too large to post here.

Mark – Thanks

John – My pleasure!

Mark – OMG, lol, that was good. I wish I could have been there. That day, I had knee surgery, so I now see what I missed. Thank you for sharing the video.

John – I’m happy you liked it. It is not a substitute for being there. But good!

John – I’m training a new puppy, and she needs my attention. Catch you another time. ?

Mark – What kind?

John – Lucy Belle, a chihuahua and terrier mix. 🙂

Mark – Sent thumbs up.

John,

That’s me in the middle (1976). I was the back tender on the # 1 paper machine at Pejepscot Paper, where Zeda worked most of his life as a beater room engineer, and Uncle Norman was my boss.

John – I will be sending you a lot of stuff. Just enjoy it when you have spare time. Pam and I live in Fort Myers. Small world. 🙂

Rebecca – I’ve got a lot of time on my hands right now trying to settle in and figure things out. I am trying to get my ducks in a row right now and figure out what I want to do about employment. I will look forward to the ‘stuff.’ Maybe sometime after this covid19 thing gets a better grip, we can get together. I’d love my husband to meet more elciks. He came late to the party. Until then, stay well! ?

John. Has your husband ever tasted our favorite dish?

If not, this picture may help.

Slovak Lokše

Thu 8/6/2020 11:56 AM

Becky,

Pam and I both retired early, and we are happy to have done so. We love the Villages, but they were out of our price range, one of the consequences of early retirement. That doesn’t stop me from wanting a golf cart. I don’t want to play golf; I want the cart. ?

It’s not the same, but I occasionally break down and buy Lefse on the Internet. Even Amazon sells it.

“Slovak lokše (pronounce lokshe) was a staple when the Elcik boys would visit our Auntie Gertrude in Maine. Like Maine lobsters, it was an excuse to eat butter. That’s all it needed, though, in Norway, they have Lefse. Unlike in Slovakia, they prefer eating them sweet – with sugar, cinnamon, peanut butter, and jam. They also add butter, milk, or cream to their mashed potatoes while we normally don’t. Butter was enough.” – From one of my Facebook posts.

Might your husband like his lokše Norwegian-style?

Bottom line: Yes, you have family in Fort Myers. Bless you!

John, IV
