My Blunder

Mon 9/14/2020 8:36 AM

John,

I committed a MAJOR BLUNDER last night. I deleted the Gamache Ancestry Tree. I was tired and can I say “it was an accident” and I know better. I am sick over this because I spent a lot of time creating it, and it was lengthy. Thank goodness I have most of it written down in my notebook and will start from scratch.

If I shared it with you on Ancestry, you probably lost it too. I’ve looked at your flash drive, and it’s awesome. I’m going to save the files and pictures on my computer. Between doing that and doing the Gamache Ancestry, I have enough to keep me busy for a longggggggg time.

Jack has started playing pool two nights a week, and I’ll do a lot of it then. We do a lot together during the day, and it’s difficult for me to find blocks of time to spend on the computer. We’re making Loksa today, and that’s time-consuming. I cooked the potatoes yesterday and put them in the refrigerator overnight. I roll them, and Jack butters them after they’re done cooking in the pan. Jack made a Loksa pan many years ago, and we always use that. He’s been craving it, so that’s today’s project.

I also have a very LARGE garden that needs cleaning up before snow flies, and I’ll start working on that this week. Jack likes the gardens but HATES working in them. I, on the other hand, LOVE gardening. It’s one of my summer hobbies!!

I talked to Nancy yesterday and will send you the list of birthdates/marriages you want.

Just a little update on a few things and to let you know how mad I am at myself, and I haven’t forgiven myself YET for my BLUNDER. I’ll get over it and move on. It can be “fixed!”

The Gamache Ancestry Tree is my priority!!

GEDCOM Rescue

Mon 9/14/2020 8:49 AM

Beth,

First, we all make mistakes. I’ve done worse. And I’ve even repeated my mistakes.

I may be able to assist you in recovering some of what you lost. Please let me try.

I never had a copy of your trees, so that is not an option. Also, export from FamilySearch.org is not a possibility as they don’t create export files.

I have a plan, though. I have noticed that you have copies in My Heritage. I have to check to see if we can create a GEDCOM file from it for you. Are there any other places we can look at?

As much as I would like Loksa, I don’t see it in the stars. I might try a new recipe I have for Polish Potatoe Pancakes. Yummy? I hope. It won’t be the same, but.

I had a 2 hour and 15-minute phone call with Nancy and gave my new hearing aids a workout. It was a lot of fun! I have not been on the phone for more than a couple of minutes for over a decade. Wow!

Again, give me a little time before you try to recreate your Gamache Family Tree.

The Gamache File

Mon 9/14/2020 9:46 AM

John,

I imported the Gamache file from My Heritage, and YES, I have it back on Ancestry, including pictures. I’ll look at HINTS for sure and will start saving sources as well. I WILL sync with Family Tree.

I am breathing easier. I panicked last night and only slept for 3 hrs. I was up at 3:30 messing around and spent an hour or more looking at your flash drive and sending and receiving texts from kids and grandkids.

Do you want me to share my Gamache Family Tree with you? If you do, you’ll see Lucille Fortin and Clarence Gamache. They had three boys and one girl. The girl was Mary Beth, and our daughter Loni Beth and Mary Beth were best friends all through school. Her mother, Lucille, was a 4th-grade teacher in the same school where I taught. Mary Beth was at our house a lot and lived three houses down from us. She always called me mom. Mary Beth lives in Rhode Island, and we rarely see her, but we keep in touch on FB. She’s married to William (Bill) Daignault, and they have a daughter, Emma Daignault. I saw the pictures you have of Emma on your flash drive. I thought you’d like to hear the story of who she is and how she’s connected to us. Loni was a bridesmaid at Mary Beth’s wedding.

Time to move on with my day. Thank you for listening to me, Whine about my BLUNDER and help me fix it.

I’m happy now,

Beth

Postscript

Readers:

We write because of speculation that someday, someone will ask about their ancestors and their family history. We wish that when they do that, there is a written record that includes not just names and dates of significant events; but also some idea of who we were both as individuals and as families.

Currently, genealogists are fond of saying that a Family Tree without sources is Mythology. True. But we argue that without stories and images to tell us the lessons learned, we gain nothing from good record keeping.

What follows is a transcript of electronic conversations with relatives as we traced our ancestor’s roots as far back as we could.

Thanks to technology, it is relatively easy to go back five generations to when our family reached the shores of America. What drove Elcik’s to make the journey? We can only guess. Our sincere hope is that someday the situation in Europe that prompted our immigration will be revealed. To identify and meet relatives from “across the pond” is something we wish for our children.

What is generally missing are life stories. We captured a few, added some images, and pray that others will pick up where we left off.
