GEDCOM Files

Sat 7/4/2020 7:31 PM

Hi John,

My name is Cindy and I am a Directly Ancestry Expert. Experts are not employees of Ancestry but are certified, Ancestry users. To protect your personal and payment information, this platform does not have access to customer accounts. However, I am able to answer questions. Thank you for writing.

I am sorry but GEDCOM FILES are text-only files. The downloads do not contain photos and other documents. I have attached a link below that explains more about GEDCOM files. https://support.ancestry.com/s/article/Moving-Trees-Between-Accounts

There are two outside companies that sync to Ancestry. When the files are synced they will contain photos and documents. The companies which sync with Ancestry are Family Tree Maker 2017 or 2019 and RootsMagic. I have attached links for both companies. Please let me know if you have any other concerns or questions.

Best Wishes,

Cindy B.

GEDCOM Files

Jul 6, 2020, 9:43 AM MDT:
Good Morning John

A GEDCOM is a universal computer language that allows programs and websites to communicate with each other.  Photos are not part of this GEDCOM.

We have what is called Treeshare, which will allow Ancestry and RootsMagic to sync with each other.  You can download your Ancestry file to RM7 or you can upload your RootsMagic file to Ancestry.  It will not allow you to connect an existing Ancestry tree with an existing RM7 file.  This process will transfer photos and sources.

If you create a GEDCOM from Ancestry or RM7 and upload it, the images will not go with.

Granting Access to Ancestry.com

Friday, July 17, 2020, 2:09 PM

John (NY),

This email is to share with you that Ancestry.com should send you instructions for logging in.

My educated guess is that family members have been on ancestory.com in the past. They chose to make their Family Trees private. Even if they had not, Ancestry hides the names of living people. Are Janien, Christine, Stephen, Kaitlyn, Nancy, Samantha, Jessica, Kathryn directly related? If so, I hope you will enter their names and birthdates.

I believe the only “general” connection between families is solved, but I have yet to build out the Family Tree to a direct link between the two of us. I believe when you begin adding names and birthdates, we will discover our specific family relationship.

John, I am making you an editor of the Family Tree site. Editor means you have access to everything. It includes individuals who are living and notes.

Send me an email at johnelcik.com with questions or if you need anything.

***The software identifies the individual’s relationship with ME as the “root” individual under each person’s name. Once we have you connected though family data to your Grandfather, I can show you how to make yourself the “root” individual. The presumptive grandparent (my best guess) is John Elcik, born March 16, 1886 – Slovakia and passed on September 05, 1962 – Lewiston, Maine.***

?

Enjoy!

Preparing John Elcik (NY) to Use Ancestry.com

Sat 7/18/2020 6:41 PM

John (NY),

Thank you! The information on recent information was needed to correct the other news I was using. I was getting the generations mixed up. I believe all is in order now for when you elect to view the Family Tree. ?

When you decide it time to begin using Ancestry.com, the following should make it easier.

I have used the Suffix field for other than its intended use for recording Jr., Sr., etc. In my record, I use the label FL, and in your record, I use the label NY. Using the standard search function will show us the right individual with less thought about spelling and dates. There are a lot of similarly named records. I also placed Father, Uncle, and Grandfather in the suffix field. Less confusing for me this way.

I recommend as a first step; you use search to find the NY record and then select the option to show the tree with you as the “root” person. It gives you a family flow chart where you can click on individuals to obtain more details.

After exploring NY, I encourage you to do the same but with FL as the “root” person.

Enjoy!

John, FL

[This naming convention became more trouble than it was worth and I stopped using it. – John P. Elcik, IV, Editor]

Jim,

What a Family Tree used to be is different from what they are today. Until recently, a family tree was simply a graphical representation of family ancestors based on name, date-of-birth, date-of-marriage, and date-of-death. With the computer tools available today, it is common practice to cite the sources and where to find proof of each item.

The catchphrase for this is that “Genealogy without Sources is Mythology.” There are a lot of sources available online. My favorite is the U.S. Federal Census (households), but I enjoy finding copies of Record of a Birth, Marriage Certificates, Death Records, Draft Registration Cards, etc.

I have been helping Beth Gamache update her tree for Jack’s family. She had sources for the Purinton branch (her parents) and was beginning to update the Gamache and the Elcik tree branches.

I would like very much to gain access to Devon’s family tree. And if it needs updating to include sources, I would gladly help her father or even do it.

Enjoy!

Your brother

Jim,

When I extend the Family Tree data to include sources, I get a lot of additional information. My tree currently has 2,258 people, 1,190 photos, 123 stories, and 2,814 records.

I have written several dozen stories myself (my idea of fun).

If you, Christopher, Devon, or her dad would like access, I only need an email address to send an invite.

My Ancestry subscription has been allowed to expire, so Guest access is all I can offer. You will be able to view but not change information if you want a backup of the GED, our Family Tree Maker 2019 databases that is doable. Family Tree Maker 2019 is a better option because it gets you the documents and media and the tree. GED only gives you the family tree.

I’m doing updates locally on my PC using Family Tree Maker 2019 software for updates. From time to time, I purchase a monthly subscription and update Ancestry with changes.

Love,

Your brother
