Smoking

On Wed, Aug 12, 2020, at 9:35 AM
Beth,
I very much enjoyed the “smoking” story.  I always thought that Jack’s dad was the mastermind behind the recipe. Learning the rest of the story is special.  My follow-up question for Jack is, does he have and use his father’s recipe for beer? And is it his father’s? As I remember, it was a “dark” brew and quite strong.  I was too young to do much more than taste it. ?
Last, I would love for you to share Byras/Byrus family information and photos. Your photos are the best.  Also, it much more fun when you have a childhood friend as a source.
I agree we do make a great team.
Take care,
John, IV

Elsik Spelling is Significant

Thu 8/13/2020 8:17 AM

John (NY),

This 1940 Census document is interesting for two reasons.

It confirms the family of Joseph (sons John J. and James G.), including his working at the Ice Cream factory, which you told me.

The 1940 Census uses the “Elsik” spelling of the surname.

The latter is particularly significant to us. The first instance I have found of your more direct relatives using this spelling is also traceable to my Great Grandfather John Elsik, Sr.

Prayers

Fri, Aug 14, 2020, at 10:33 AM

Beth,

Only now can I think about the rest of your message. Our prayers are answered.

Thank you for making the fixes. That is a very welcome surprise. I would have thought when I downsized to Guest that you might have lost that ability. I’m pleased to have been wrong.

I remember Pete, but I didn’t remember that that was not his given name.

I’m enjoying the additional details about the kielbasa and homebrew recipes. Is there any chance the recipes can be shared, or do they need to remain a secret? The memory I had was that Jack’s father did have a smokehouse, so you confirmed that for me.

Thanks.

Re: Joseph Elcik

John (NY),

Joseph Elcik just contacted me through LinkedIn.

“As my father is James Elcik and was the middle, Jack(John) passed away last year and his younger brother Richard passed several years ago. Mother was Rose and Father was Joseph Elcik. Unusual for myself, my mother is Slovakian, and even more unusual, my wife is 3/4 Slovakian. Somewhere with either my father or aunt is an Elcik family tree book. I have only seen it once. If I do come across, perhaps I can copy and send out.”

Joseph had to go to a work meeting, but I’ll keep you posted.

Beth,

Joseph Elcik just contacted me through LinkedIn. Given my recent email to John Elcik in New York (I copied you on it), this is almost funny. Lol.
