Gravesite Photo

Beth,
That was a tough one for sure… it bothered me for a while … I hate to be beaten!!

I went to the Catholic Church in Lewiston to get the map. They said all cemetery maps are at the St Peters Cemetery office.  Good to know… (We will see.)
If you hadn’t given me the death dates, they probably would never be found…That was about all that was readable…
I always had a hard time taking pictures there as the sun is in the wrong place… It is shining only on one side of the stones, so the other side of the stone gets moldy…
This cemetery is the only one I know of that the stones face South to North. The Cemetery rule is that your feet face the rising sun (East) and the sunsets behind your head (West)… Didn’t know that, huh????
I did put them in Find A Grave and put obits and linked everyone … The problem arose when the two last generations used their middle name Paul as their first name. Also, even the oldest names all were John P.  (Genealogy nightmare)
Take care………… And stay safe…

I’m forwarding you a conversation with my friend, Earl, at the Historial Society.  He found the gravestone for your Great Grandparents at St Cyril cemetery!!  They’re on the same gravestone and are basically unreadable.  He explains that in the email.  I’ll include them on the flash drive I send you once I get a clearer picture in the spring.  With his help, I’m confident that’ll happen.

I am over the top excited about his finding them.  This is one more piece of the Elcik puzzle we can put to rest.

I especially love his comment about this being a genealogy nightmare!!

John,

This sounds great and accurate.  Did you notice the spelling of Elcik at the bottom of the gravestone as Ilcik??  I thought that was interesting considering the 3 different spellings we’ve seen on documents, etc.  I’m very anxious to take pictures of the gravestone to add to my collection I already have.  I also plan to help Earl clean it up in the Spring, and hopefully, we’ll be able to get better pictures after doing that.

Can you clear something up for me?  Are the eBook and My Cousins Group both on Facebook?  As you well know by now, I’m easily confused.

eBook Promotion

Beth,
I used the message below to promote our eBook by posting on Facebook (temporarily restored), MeWe Social Network, and a My Cousins Group on Facebook.
Enjoy!

————————–
Beth Gamache and her friend Earl at the Historical Society have located the gravesite of my Great-grandparents.  The search at Saint Cyril Cemetery was initiated because of a document from Sally (Wentworth) Adams that said that they would be found in the Saint Cyril Cemetery in Lisbon Falls. She also provided us with burial dates to complement their dates of death. Earl credits these dates as being important clues.
Earl traveled to Lewiston to find the Church records and then saw to it that a photo of the gravesite and John P. Elcik (Sr.’s) obituary is posted now at FindAGrave.  See:  https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/220993637/john-p-elcik
The gravestone identifies the correct name and spelling of my Great-grandmothers’s name as Maria Anna Pelcarsky. This is a correction from Mary to Maria Anna and a confirmation of spelling for Pelcarsky.
It is historically interesting in John, Sr.’s Obituary that his parents are identified as Mr. & Mrs. John Elcik. It suggests a research question as to whether he is John Sr. or John Jr. If the latter is true, all generations of John Paul Elcik are off by one generation. This would make me the 5th and my son the 6th generation. It is a moot point but interesting to speculate.
The email correspondence between Beth, Earl, and I will be included in the MyCousins eBook.  Beth and I are still planning on a May 3rd publish date.

Beth,
I didn’t notice. Wow. Is that a head-scratcher? I think so. I wonder what the Ilcik Elcik’s will think about that?
Yes, they both are on Facebook.  I didn’t remember doing it, but I created the MyCousins group on my Facebook account about 9 years ago. I’ll send you an invite.  Nothing much there. I posted this email because it adds a few subscribers to our list. 🙂 I had to resurrect my Facebook account for the second time to add Pam as an administrator to MyCousins. Now when I really retire from Facebook, I can still have the MyCousins group. 🙂 Once you are a member, I can make you an administrator too. Facebook gives you 30 days to change your mind about deleting. I have not lasted for 7 days. Lol.
The MyCousins group might be an alternative to MeWe. What do you think?.
Two more new developments.
  • I have Mary Anna Pelcarsky’s obituary, and she DID have a sister: Anna (Pelcarsky) Karkos.  This confirms my theory that there are two connections between the Elcik and Karkos families. I will tell Terry L. Karkos and see if this inspires him to start up his website.
  • Naria Anna Pelcarsky also used the alias Mary, which makes me feel better about our past decisions.
See the attached image for confirmation of both items.
