————————————

Hi John,

I can see we share the same name. My dad’s name was John Elcik Sr. He recently died in September, and his brother’s name is Andrew Elcik! My grandfather was Andrew Elcik, and he was from Lisbon Falls, Maine; born in 1911, he eventually settled in Queens, New York, and then my father came out to Long Island, where I live now!

However, one of the first things I did immediately notice is that my great grandfather also worked at the Pejepscot Paper Mill to supplement his income as a farmer. I also believe before he came to NYC in 1932, my grandfather Andrew Elcik also worked briefly at the paper mill. I hope you are well, and I will be in touch.

My grandfather Andrew Elcik was born here in Lisbon Falls, Maine, in 1911 (died 1995 on Long Island), and it was my great grandfather John Ilcik who came here thru Ellis Island in the early 1900s (don’t have an exact date but early 1900’s). All they know is it was spelled Ilcik in Europe (Austria Hungarian empire what is now the Czech Republic ). It was changed by mistake at Ellis Island when they just put it down wrong ( not on Purpose ).

I was always told we were Slovak and Not Czech, and my grandfather Andrew and Great grandfather spoke the language.

As I shared with you on Facebook, my father is John Elcik, born in 1943 in Queens, NY, and died in 2018, and you have the correct year of 1962, when I believe my great grandfather died. If you did not see it on Facebook, my grandfather Andrew Elcik came to NYC in approx. Between 1929 – 1932 because he could not find work at the paper mill anymore due to the great depression. He ended up working for Bryers Ice cream for 40 years. He married Jeannie Pascarella around 1939 and had two sons Andrew Elcik born in 1941, and my dad John Elcik born in 1943.

My uncle is still alive but hazy about the family’s past. I wish my dad John Elcik was alive because he could help solve this mystery. My uncle Andrew Elcik had three children: Christine, born 1965, Andrew born 1967, and Jaqueline, born 1970 or 71.

We have pictures of my great grandparents and grandfather from Lisbon Falls, which I Will eventually scan to you. We will eventually figure out the direct link. More to come.

In the picture with my grandfather Andrew Elcik, to the right is my grandmother Jeannie Elcik ( Born Pascarella ) and my dad John Elcik and my uncle Andrew Elcik to the left. My uncle Andrew is still alive. Everyone else in the picture is deceased.

I know it is his grave because this info provided below is true: He was born in Czechoslovakia, the son of Paul and Mary Elcik. His wife is the former Mary Jonek, whom he married in 1905. He came to the United States 58 years ago. He is predeceased by his wife, Mary, who died in 1951. [Editor’s note: This is where some of the confusion got started. Mary Jonek and Mary Pelcarsky were two different individuals. I highlighted this in red on your copy of the family tree]

He is survived by four sons Joseph of Brooklyn, NY; George of Lisbon Falls, ME; Andrew of Corona, NY; Michael of Miami, FL; a daughter Mrs. Mary King of Westville, NH; a brother Paul of Lisbon Falls, ME. He is my great grandfather.

Will Joseph Elcik Join Our Group?

Joseph,

If you are interested I can share with you some of the more interesting aspects of my research into our Elcik surname.

I’ve been researching connections between two waves of immigrants in the 1880’s. The families share a common heritage (Austria/Hungary/Slovakia), surname, and given names; specifically Andrew, George, James, John, Joseph, and Michael. We all settled initially in Lisbon Falls or Durham, Maine.

It may not be possible to link the families with U.S. data alone so I have expanded my search to European sources. Information is scarce and I’m handicapped not knowing the Slovak language. Nevertheless, I have discovered a lot and am willing to share my findings.

Warmest regards,

John

New York or Durham?

For weeks I have been making references to “New York” and “Maine” Elcik’s.  It may be a habit that I can’t break.

Nevertheless, I can share that your observations of the part the Androscoggin river may have played in our family history have inspired me to make a hypothesis for testing.

It may be more accurate to refer to the families as either “Lisbon Falls” or “Durham” Elcik’s.

Do have this right?

Durham and Lisbon Falls

Sat 8/15/2020 11:47 PM

The Durham and Lisbon Falls Elcik families make sense to me.  I do understand who you’re talking about (well most of the time).  It appears that most of the Durham Elcik children moved to New York except for George.  It gets confusing when we’re talking about Andrew Elcik because there are 2 of them, one in Lisbon Falls and one in Durham plus the Lisbon Falls Andrew had 2 sons, Eugene and ANDREW!!

You were correct when you said there are too many Johns and Andrews and now you’re communicating with Joseph Elcik and there was a Durham Joseph!!   No wonder I get confused!!!

The same is true for the Byras family, several Johns, Josephs, Andrews, and Marys.  Thank goodness their last name is different.  People weren’t very creative in those days I guess, although they may have wanted to name sons the same name as the father to carry on the family name, kinda like your great-great-grandfather, great grandfather, father, you and your son!!!  Must be in the genes!!!!!

In my family, it was Humphrey, Thankful, John, George, and Nathaniel.  An occasional Hepzibah and Hezekiah names were thrown into the mix.  That was a nightmare for me and I spent many sleepless nights trying to figure all that out!!!  Who in the world would name a child Hepzibah or Hezekiah?????  Again, must be in the genes.

Here I go, rambling on when I need to go to bed.  It’s past my bedtime!!

Catholic Churches

Mon 8/17/2020 12:20 AM

There were two Catholic churches in Lisbon Falls: Holy Family and St. Cyril. Also, there were two cemeteries: St. Cyril and Mt. Calvary. We think Mt. Calvary is the Slovak cemetery. Jack’s mom and dad are at St. Cyril, and most of your relatives as well.

There were many Slovak and French families in town, but their religion was Catholic. Jack’s family went to Holy Family Church, which was considered the Slovak church. Gert was Slovak, and Norman was French.

In talking with Jack, he thinks families decided which cemetery they wanted to be buried in, possibly depending on which church they attended. Hillside was considered the Protestant cemetery, mostly of Protestants, but some Catholics buried there.

It may be a matter of mixed religions within families or couples wanting to get buried together. We honestly don’t know the answer to that.

Either this clears it up or makes it more confusing. I’m going with more confusing!!!

Again, it’s past my bedtime,

Beth

45 Davis Street

On Mon, Aug 17, 2020, at 11:26 AM

Beth,

I found the house with the 21 Davis Street location, but Zillow says the house is in Lisbon, not Lisbon Falls. Did Lisbon annex it?

I know it is the right house as Zillow has 25 pictures.

It was worth the search as the pictures remind me of coming “home” to 45 Davis Street.

I remember how comfortable the upstairs bed was. I don’t know what kind of mattress it was, but manufacturers don’t make beds like that anymore. You sink into the mattress, and the covers were incredibly warm.

I remember custom kitchen cabinets installed during one of our all too infrequent visits.

Finally, I remember there being a chicken coop—no pictures of it. ?

45 Davis Street

21 Davis St. is in Lisbon Falls. Zillow probably saw it as the Town of Lisbon, which is comprised of Lisbon Falls, Lisbon Center, and Lisbon. The Town of Lisbon has one governing body and one school department. There are 2 zip codes; Lisbon Falls is 04252, and Lisbon is 04250. It’s confusing for sure.

I sometimes go to realtor.com, looking for homes for sale in Lisbon. We’re not looking to sell our house or buy another one; I like to “look” once in a while. If I say, Lisbon Falls, it always comes up with homes in both Lisbon Falls and Lisbon. As far as I know, there isn’t a Davis St. in Lisbon, only Lisbon Falls.

The kitchen cabinets were built before I came into the picture, and the chicken coop was gone as well. I’ve heard many stories about both of them and the before and after the renovation of the kitchen, living room, bathroom, and Gert’s sewing room.
