Father’s Papers, Maybe Not

Sat, August 1, 2020, at 5:34 AM

Beth,

I assumed, I now think incorrectly, that the document found by Jeff in my father’s papers was written by my father.

The problem, however, is that not one of the four birthdates referenced match up with any individual in the family tree.

Do you have anything on these dates?

  • “I was born in Kenduskeag, Maine March 7, 1905.”
  • “Gramp was born in Kenduskeag, Maine, March 25, 1879.”
  • “Gram was born in Mansfield, Maine January 5, 1885.”
  • “Your Mother was born August 26, 1908; I think in Denmark, Maine.”

Given my Dad’s date of birth, I initially thought these would be John, Jr., John Sr., Mary Pelcarsky, and Mary Byrus.

They are not as we have their birthdates as follows.

  • John Jr. 20 FEB 1896
  • John Sr. 06 NOV 1866
  • Mary Pelcarsky 06 NOV 1870
  • Mary Byrus 05 NOV 1900

Another puzzle to be solved.

A Puzzle to Be Solved

Sat 8/1/2020 4:47 PM

John,

The more we dig, the more confusing it gets. I have a message from my friend, Pam Lizotte. Her father is George Karkos, and her grandmother Annie Elcik. She has:

  • John Elcik,1868
  • Mary Pelcarsky,,1875

She does not have death dates.

CHILDREN

  • John Paul Elcik, 1896
  • Mike Elcik, 1897
  • Mary Elcik, 1900
  • Andrew John, 1901-1951
  • Lizzie Elcik, 1905
  • Annie M. Elcik 1905-1982
  • Elcik, 1910

According to her, John P. Elcik Sr. was married to Mary Pelcarsky, whose name I’ve seen before.

I don’t know what to think at this point. Could there possibly be “another” John Elcik that we don’t yet know??

Talked to Nancy Today

Sun 8/2/2020 11:04 PM

John,

I get that. My mother and father were always “closed mouth” about things that mattered. In those days, don’t talk about it, it’s a BIG secret. I have found out so many, many secrets about my family since I joined Ancestry, some of which I’m sure my parents didn’t know and some they did. Some personal experiences, some not.

Nancy remembers your grandfather being a widower and eventually marrying Helen Mosko, who was a widow. There was some settlement of the estate because he sold the house where he and your grandmother lived. That may be from where the “checks” came. All this is speculation. Jack’s mom wrote the letter in 1961, and your grandfather died in 1963. We may never know for sure. The fact remains, he had a second wife, Helen Mosko.

It’s always fun and extremely frustrating to try and fit the pieces of the puzzle together. I DO believe between you, Jeff, me, and Nancy, we may have figured out “the rest of the story”!!

Hi Johnny,

You’re still Johnny to me, so deal with it. This is Nancy. Beth forwarded two pictures to me. The one with a squirrel on the shoulder is “our” grandfather. The other picture of you and your dad with a man and woman is a puzzle. I am positive that it is NOT your mother. I am wondering if they might not be your grandparents on your mother’s side. I have pictures that my mother gave to me of our grandparent’s families. She wrote the identities on the backs of them. I will make copies for you and also copies of the Naturalization papers that I have.

Your cousin,

Nancy

The Family Tree, etc.

John,

YES, definitely. I could share that with my Historical Society friend!!!

THANK YOU!!

I don’t think you’re crazy, you’re obsessed, kinda like me. I have a notebook full of handwritten notes for my family and yours I started 3 years ago. It’s the only way I can sort out everything. We both have a problem but that’s ok because it keeps our minds occupied!! AND IT’S FUN!!

Re: Joseph Elcik

John, IV,

Here I go again, a bit puzzled. In the 1940 census, Joseph and Rose had 2 sons, John & James. Is Joseph in this email, James’ son?? If so, then John died last year, and there was another younger brother, Richard, who died several years ago, and a sister (he didn’t mention her name just that she’s his aunt.) That would mean Richard and a sister were born after 1940. Am I right or wrong or just really messed up about this??
