Questions and Answers

Subject: Questions and Answers

Nancy,

Do you and Larry still own the farm? Do you still work? Where are the kids, and what are they doing?
Did you see my challenge questions about the stories I tell? I told part of two stories and asked if anybody can, as Paul Harvey would say, tell, the “rest of the story.”
Who in our family was a Warlock? How do we know this to be true?
Who owned the dog “Kippy” and what Kippy’s story could I tell? (It still can bring the house down with laughter.)
You should know the answer to both as they are close to home. lol

For us, Fort Myers Elcik’s, Life in Florida is good!

Pam and I are enjoying semi-retirement. “Semi” because I sell digital real estate at identityXperts.com for fun (my only profit so far has been selling Edulytics.com), and Pam sells Beaded Necklaces as the PrincessOfCrafts.com on BeadedNecklaces.com.

J.P. is getting married this year and has bought a house with his fiancé Ana. We are enjoying that they both are teachers with lots of time off. ? J.P. teaches science and math, and Ana is a kindergarten teacher.

Michelle is now working as a Pharmacy Tech for Walgreens. She makes more money than she did as a Store Manager and has more flexibility with her schedule, a good thing. We see her a lot while she makes renovations to the condo she bought with and then from her brother.

Pam and I just adopted a new puppy: Lucy Belle. Daisy and Holly went to the Rainbow Bridge over a year ago, so we felt it was time. Both of us had forgotten; however, how hard it is to train a puppy. Lucy is a challenge.

With Pam’s sister Kathleen also in Fort Myers, there are lots of opportunities for Family activities.

Usually, Pam and Michelle love visiting Mickey and Minnie at Disney in Orlando, and we all love cruises. The big ships are amazing. Disney has reopened (with masks and social distancing), and we have a cruise scheduled for our Wedding Anniversary in November. We are hoping the reservation holds.

I am working on the Ancestry.com family tree with Beth and monitoring Facebook to stay out of trouble.

How about you and our family in Maine?

The Gamache File

Mon 9/14/2020 9:46 AM

John,

I imported the Gamache file from My Heritage, and YES, I have it back on Ancestry, including pictures. I’ll look at HINTS for sure and will start saving sources as well. I WILL sync with Family Tree.

I am breathing easier. I panicked last night and only slept for 3 hrs. I was up at 3:30 messing around and spent an hour or more looking at your flash drive and sending and receiving texts from kids and grandkids.

Do you want me to share my Gamache Family Tree with you? If you do, you’ll see Lucille Fortin and Clarence Gamache. They had three boys and one girl. The girl was Mary Beth, and our daughter Loni Beth and Mary Beth were best friends all through school. Her mother, Lucille, was a 4th-grade teacher in the same school where I taught. Mary Beth was at our house a lot and lived three houses down from us. She always called me mom. Mary Beth lives in Rhode Island, and we rarely see her, but we keep in touch on FB. She’s married to William (Bill) Daignault, and they have a daughter, Emma Daignault. I saw the pictures you have of Emma on your flash drive. I thought you’d like to hear the story of who she is and how she’s connected to us. Loni was a bridesmaid at Mary Beth’s wedding.

Time to move on with my day. Thank you for listening to me, Whine about my BLUNDER and help me fix it.

I’m happy now,

Beth

The Pelcarsky Puzzle

The Pelcarsky Puzzle

We theorize that Mary and Maria are probably different people; however, Marie’s records have become intertwined with Mary’s on some public family trees. We suspect the women could be sisters born 5 years apart in 1870 and 1875, respectively.

They Are Not Sisters

Our sister’s theory was wrong as both birth years apply only to Mary Pelcarsky.  The abt 1875 birthdate in the 1910 U.S. Federal Census was an estimate.  Her actual birthdate is 6 NOV 1870.

There Are Two Different Women

We were correct that there are two different women. Mary was born in 1870, and Maria Anna was born in 1927:

Mary (Pelcarsky) Elsik was born on 6 NOV 1870 in Austria (or Czechoslovakia). She married John Elsik, Sr. (1866), and they have three sons: John, Jr, Mike, and Andrew; three daughters: Mary, Annie, and Lizzie.  The source is the 1910 U.S. Census. She died 23 AUG 1936. This is my great grandparents and family.

Maria Anna Pelcarsky was born in 1927 as calculated from the Ohio Death Index; she died on 12 OCT 1983 according to the same Index;  Maria Pelcarsky married Paul Ilcik. They have a daughter Annie Ilcik. The source is the 19 JUN 1911 Marriage record of Annie Ilcik to Andrew Basala. Paul and Annie are what you and I are calling Durham Elcik’s.

The History Behind 4 Pelcarsky Marriages

Mary Pelcarsky (1870) married John Elcik, Sr. (1866). They both were born in Austria. They have three sons: John, Jr, Mike, and Andrew; three daughters: Mary, Annie, and Lizzie. This is my great grandfather and family. The source is the 1910 U.S. Census.

Maria Pelcarsky married Paul Ilcik, and they have a daughter Annie Ilcik. The source is the 19 JUN 1911 Marriage record of Annie Ilcik to Andrew Basala.

Anna “Annie” Pelcarsky (1848) married Joseph Paul Karkos (1867). She was born in Austria, and her parents were born in Slavonia. The source is the 11 APR 1921 marriage of Joseph Thomas Karkos and Mildred Aris Alexander. Other sources include the 1900 and 1920 U.S. Census.  There could be two relationships between the Pelcarsky and Karkos families. A second relationship is Annie Elcik (daughter of Mary Pelcarsky) marriage to George F. Karkos on 9 FEB 1925.

Mary Pelcarsky (1879) married Joseph Pelcarsky (1874). Both were born in Czechoslovakia. They have two sons: Joe and Edward; three daughters: Ann, Martha, and Rose. The source is the 1940 U.S. Census. There is no known relationship between Mary and the other three. I believe them to be unrelated to us.

The Preferred Spelling is Pelcarsky

  • Pelcarsky – Mothers’s maiden name, according to Annie Elcik, wife of George F. Karkos.
  • Pelcarsky – Mother’s maiden name on 19 JUN 1911 Marriage record of Annie Ilcik to Andrew Basala.

6 Alternative Spellings

The maiden name for Mary Pelcarsky is different on the following records:

  • Mary Polscoke is John Elcik’s mother on his 20 FEB 1896 birth, Maine Vital Records
  • Mary Pelchascay is John Elcik’s mother on his marriage to Mary Byrus (sic), Maine Marriage Index
  • Mary Palcsak is Mary Elcik’s mother upon her 4 OCT 1915 wedding to John Dutko, Maine Marriage Index
  • Mary Pelesaky is Michael J. Elcik’s mother on his 1 AUG 1930 marriage to Annie H. Sero, Maine Marriage Index
  • Mary Polcarski is an unknown daughter’s mother on her 29 AUG 1910 birth, Maine Vital Records

Also, there is Mary Pelchaleky (Marie Pelcarsky) married to Paul Elcik, Sr., Maine Vital Records

Postscript

Yes, this one baffled me for a long time.

JP’s Wedding

Mon 11/2/2020 7:56 AM

Beth,

It is official. J.P. and Ana were married yesterday in a micro-wedding held in a gorgeous glass room on the edge of the natural habitat in Bonita Springs.
After the ceremony, we had the pleasure of feeding flamingos and could have fed alligators too. We opted to go to the married couple’s home for cake and refreshments. I’m sure that we will go back to the habitat as it is a great place to visit and close by.
More details and “official” pictures will be on the flash drive, but for now, I have joyfully added to JP’s record on Ancestry.com.
Wife: Ana Kristine Del Moral
Her father: Luis Miguel Del Moral, Jr.
Her mother: Maria Suarez
Her brother: Luis Miguel Del Moral, III

The Pelcarsky Puzzle

Wed 11/25/2020 3:22 PM

Beth,

Yesterday I received documents and photos from Elizabeth May (Adams) Shute.  I am over the moon, happy with what she has provided.  Most of the information is related to the Skillin branch of the family, which will take time to bring into the MyCousins tree.

Where Are My Great-Grandparents Buried?

So far, her notes on the Elcik branch resurfaces one huge question, i.e., where are my Great-grandparents buried?  John Paul Elcik, Sr. (06 NOV 1866-24 MAY 1941) and Mary Pelcarsky (16 NOV 1870-23 AUG 1936)?

John Elcik, Jr. (20 FEB 18996- 31 MAR 1963) in St. Cyril is my Grandfather, and he is married to Mary A. Gertrude Byrus (5 NOV 1990-18 APR 1951). We have the benefit of a photo.

Could father and son both be buried in St. Cyril Cemetery?  I’m beginning to think so.

Who Is Mary Polscoke?

Elizabeth’s notes identify two different individuals:

  • Maria Anna Parcheky (16 NOV 1870-23 AUG 1936); Born in Austria, died in Lewiston and buried in St. Cyril’s Cemetery. Elizabeth shows Maria as being married to John, Sr. (06 NOV 1866-24 MAY 1941).
  • Mary Polscoke (28 SEP 1887-13 AUG 1951, Born in Austria, and buried in Calvery Cemetry. Elizabeth shows Mary as being married to John, Jr. (20 FEB 1886-31 MAR 1963)

[The first record is my Great-Grandmother. She and my Great-Grandfather are buried in St. Cyril Cemetery. We have only recently found the gravesite, but we know have pictures. – Dr. John P. Elcik, Editor]

While it is comforting that we have the same birth/death dates for Mary Pelcarsky as she does for Maria Anna Parcheky, the question remains, what is the real spelling for John Sr.’s wife (her maiden name)? Mary Pelcarsky, Maria Anna Parcheky, or something else? And who is Mary Polscoke?

What is the Correct Spelling for My Great-Grandmother’s Maiden Name?

As you know, I have documents where surnames other than Pelcarsky were used, but I discounted them as the narrative of George F. Karkos (taken from his wife Anna Elcik) seemed the more creditable.

  • Polscoke is the spelling of John Elcik, Jr’s mother on his 20 FEB 1896 birth, Maine Vital Records.
  • Pelchascay is John Elcik, Jr’s mother on his marriage to Mary Byrus (sic), Maine Marriage Index.
  • Palcsak is Mary Elcik’s mother upon her 4 OCT 1915 wedding to John Dutko, Maine Marriage Index.
  • Pelesaky is Michael J. Elcik’s mother on his 1 AUG 1930 marriage to Annie H. Sero, Maine Marriage Index.
  • Polcarski is an unknown daughter’s mother on her 29 AUG 1910 birth, Maine Vital Records.
  • Pelchaleky (Marie Pelcarsky) married Paul Elcik, Sr., Maine Vital Records.

Also, supporting the George F. Karkos spelling of Pelcarsky are:

  • Mary Pelcarsky is Michael’s mother, as recorded in the 19 JUL 1920 Record of Marriage in Lisbon Falls, Maine for Mary Sero (Clerk) and Michael J. Elcik (mill operator).
  • Mary Pelcarsky is John’s mother in the 11 JUN 1918 Record of Marriage in Lisbon Falls, Maine for Mary Byras (Home) and John Paul Elcik (Laborer).

I have checked the online records at both Mount Calvery Cemetery and St. Cyril Cemetery for three spellings: Pelcarsky, Polscoke, Parcheky.  I can’t find a gravesite using any of them.

The definitive solution to the surname puzzle may require that we find John Elcik, Sr. or Mary’s gravesite.

Beth, Do you think not all of the individuals buried at these cemeteries may be identified online? [I know, I’m driving you crazy, again.]

John, IV

P.S. I also know how much you enjoy visiting cemeteries. Take Jack with you. Lol.

Our Family eBook, Entitled “My Cousins”

Fri 11/27/2020 10:28 PM
Everybody (mycousins@bloodrelatives.com, 27 people),
I just got a HUGE package from Jeff today!
The package arrived safely, and I am ecstatic about its contents. Wow!  He had the treasure trove of Elcik, Gamache, and who knows what else memories for sure!
It may take me years to sort this out.  Not only will I be converting items to electronic media, time, and expense permitting, but I will also do my best to identify items.  I’m not sure how to do that yet. Pinterest might be an option. Any suggestions?
To give you an idea of the “treasures,” the first couple of items I looked at:
  • Pictures of Nancy and Jack Gamache (including baby pictures of Nancy)
  • A copy of the Newspaper account of the Nancy Gamache and Larry Kashmer Wedding
The package includes thousands of photos (paper, not digital) and documents.  There are also hundreds, if not more, slides. I don’t yet know how to digitalize the latter.
The priority one for me now is to get my scanner setup and start with some photos.
Naturally, I plan to share, but this is a major undertaking, and I have no idea when that will happen.
This is truly awesome! If you don’t have it, Jeff’s email address is jeff@anyport.com if you want to say thanks.
Love to you all,
John, IV
P.S. It is not a competition, but if you have items to share, please consider doing it. I would love to hear from everyone.
