Fishing

Tue 10/6/2020 3:13 PM

Nancy and Beth,

I was surprised to find these two photos. I thought I had discovered all the photos, especially the one with the two of us in it was unexpected.

I also understand that Mark is the fisherman in the family and that he may have inherited that from our grandfather.  The picture shows one of only three to four times I ever went fishing.

One of the times was in Japan. It was memorable because we were fishing in a stocked pond and we used something like cheese for bait. And the adults were served Saki, a rice wine, while the rainbow trout we caught were being cooked for us to eat.

Here in Florida, we have a stocked pond within walking distance of the house, but we are not allowed to eat the fish we catch. NO fun at all. I’ve been once and didn’t catch a thing.

Bill,

It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance.

Wow! I love your background story and look forward to trying to answer future questions.

Also, it appears like you are tackling a huge, complex topic, i.e., all of Lisbon.

My little part of the story seems to be tied to a Lisbon Falls Elcik family that mostly stayed in Androscoggin County and a Durham Elcik family that moved to New York.  It isn’t black and white, but that is how Beth and I have been describing it.

What I initially sent you is concentrated around the brick wall we have run into.  If you need more information for your project or help us, tell me what would help.

This time I attached a couple of Elcik documents and my favorite photo that might also be useful in your research.

Thanks for the contact information for Deeb Keamy. I’m sure I will find a need to reach out.

Regards,

John

U.S. National Archives and Records Administration

Tue 10/13/2020 3:46 PM

Beth & Bill,

The attached John Paul Elcik document is from a different source (new to me), the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).

It is the lost reference to Parhovjani S, Czechoslovakia, as the birthplace for my great-grandfather. At least I think it is.

The birthdates are not the same, Ouch!
  • Using the 1910 Census, we have John Elsik (Elcik), born 16 NOV 1866 in Austria.
  • Using the NARA, we have John Paul Elcik, born 28 NOV 1867 in Czechoslovakia.
Keep in mind that the 1910 U.S. Federal Census information has been considered gold as we have the 1910 family photo that matches family members individual-for-individual.

The NARA document also identifies this great-grandfather’s parents as John P. Elcik and Elizabeth Baron.  If true, am I the fifth John Paul Elcik and not the fourth? I have found references to Elizabeth Baron before and set them aside.  This could be significant, so I am attaching two documents about her.

I’m sharing this even as I don’t know quite what to make of the information.  Is this my great-grandfather, or do we have yet another John Elcik?

Re: Eugene Elcik, Novelist with a Maine flavor!

John, IV,

I’m happy you and Gene Elcik are communicating, and thank you for sharing your email with him. We had a wonderful visit with Gene on Wednesday. I gave him as much information as I could about the research you and I are doing on the Elcik family. He was very interested in that. I’m hoping he will be a contributor as I believe he’s the only living Elcik of his generation.

I photocopied several pages of notes I’ve taken and some of the family group sheets you sent me. While I was doing that, he and Jack spent some time talking, and even Jack said how much he enjoyed that. It was wonderful to have him here with us for a couple of hours.

Also, Marilyn Keamy stopped by the same day, and she and Gene were happy to see each other, even if it was for a little while. She’s soon to be 93 and pretty frail, but she has an incredible memory. She didn’t stay long; she wore a mask as did Gene while she was here. I kept a 6′ distance, and she was comfortable with that. She’s so afraid of coming in any contact with people during COVID, and I agree with that. She doesn’t go out in public much at all and has even stopped going to the library even though they’re open. She went every day and spent several hours socializing, doing crossword puzzles, etc. She wrote the names on the back of the Karkos photo you sent. She knew all of them and even some stories about them. She’s truly amazing!! She didn’t know, nor did Gene, if Anna and Mary Pelcarsky were sisters. That remains a mystery.

Ancestry.com’s Messaging Platform

Tue 11/10/2020 12:54 PM

Beth,

I think 3 Ilcik-Elcik’s males are on Ancestry.com’s messaging platform: Brian, John, Robert, and Stephen.

I’m reaching out to them to share what I am doing to encourage interest in the Elcik family history.

The following text is generically what each received with some personalization added to each message.

———–
Greetings,

I’m working on Genealogy brick wall scenarios related to the Elcik surname.

Two families came to America in the late 1888s or early 1900s. Today both families share the Elcik surname, Slovak heritage, and a Catholic background. Back then, the surnames were Elsik and Ilcik.

⦁ John Elsik (1866-1941) was married to Mary Pelcarsky (1875-1936). John immigrated to America in 1891, and Mary immigrated in 1896.
⦁ John Ilcik (1886-1982) was married to Mary Jeho Zena Jonek (1887-1951). John immigrated to America in 1905, and Mary immigrated a year later in 1906

I believe that there is a family relationship linking John Elsik to John Ilcik.
Finding the link has proven difficult as the church records in Europe most likely were destroyed in World War II.

John Elsik (1866-1941) is my Great Grandfather.

One possibility for finding the link between the two families is through a DNA test between two males, one from each family.

I’m looking to identify someone from the Ilick family who has or is willing to take a DNA test and share data.  There are two options: Ancestry.com is currently offering a 40% discount on its $99 test. It might be helpful. The better option when you seek a match between two living men is a Y-111 test. Admittedly, this is expensive at $250 for each participant.

This is a chance to make history within the Elcik family. If you know someone who might be interested, please contact me. I’m looking for a hero. ?

Also, let me know if you want to be kept informed about the Elcik Family Tree. It is called My Cousins and includes data for both families. The tree has 2,650 people, 1,399 Photos, and 140 LifeStories. Access is by invitation only.  I’ll send one upon request.

Warmest regards,
Dr. John Paul Elcik, IV

————————–

I will send a shorter but similar outreach message to the females on the Messaging service: Christine, Janie, Jessica, Kaitlyn, Kathryn, Marcie, Nancy. Primary, I’m limiting outreach to those spelling our surname Elcik. As you might expect, none are using the Ilcik spelling.
I hope to gain additional interest in our family history. Here’s to hope!

Terry L. Karkos, Maine Genealogist

November 19 at 1:38 PM.

[Terry L. Karkos is a former Staff writer, a photojournalist at Sun Journal (Lewiston, Maine).  His genealogy website KarlosChronicles.com was one of the first Slovak websites I visited.  There I learned “that George F. Karkos was born in Lisbon Falls on September 11, 1899. He married Annie M. Elcik in Lisbon Falls on February 9, 1925. Annie, born in Durham, Maine, on April 10, 1905, to John and Mary (Pelcarsky) Elcik, died in Lisbon Falls on May 14, 1982. George died in Brunswick, Maine, on April 7, 1965.” Annie had a twin sister named
Elizabeth.” – Dr. John P. Elcik, IV – Editor]

John, IV – Do you know if there is a family relationship between Mary Pelcarsky (1875-1936) and Anna Pelcarsky Karkos (1877-1940? This would be the second relationship between Elcik and Karkos families as Annie M. Elcik (1905) married George F. Karkos in 1925.

Terry – No. I know Anna’s parents were Joseph Pelcarsky and Anna Belyan, though. Belyan was born c. 1848 and died in Lisbon Falls on March 1, 1938. Anna Pelcarsky was born 9-17-1877 in Parchovany, Slovakia. The funny thing is, Joseph K was 26 when he married 15-year-old Anna Pelcarsky. Wondering if it was an arranged marriage

John, IV – Thank you! This is the second time you have helped me. Years ago, when your website was active, I first learned about Annie Elcik from you. I hope you choose to bring your website back. It was well done. Warmest regards!

Terry – Working on bringing it back. I need to find a site to park it again. Thanks, John. Glad I could help

John, IV – I might be able to help. I have extra space on my SiteGround account. I could set up a WordPress site for you if you wish. Are you familiar with WordPress? Us Genealogists should stick together.

Terry – I have heard of WordPress. My brother in Utah sent me a site to check out. I will get my site back up. Several people have been asking about it. My wife and I moved to Holbrook, AZ, last August, after selling my house closer to my Dad and siblings and their families down in Apache Jct and Gilbert. In Utah, my brother Scott, who also does genealogy, just visited Saturday, driving my Dad (83) up here from AJ. I hope you are doing well.

John, IV – I am. My wife and I are adjusting to having adult children by adopting dogs. Getting our second next Sunday.

Terry – Oh, nice! We’ve got two adult kids, one outside of Green Bay and the other at the Cape entrance in Mass. I don’t know if they have pets, but we’ve got four grandkids, one of whom is autistic.

John, IV – Our son and daughter live close to us in Fort Myers, Florida. Michelle is a Pharmacy tech and 10 minutes away. JP is a teacher and just got married. They are about 45 minutes away. I tease that they live in Canada. ?

Terry – Lol.

John, IV – My daughter in law teaches autistic and otherwise challenged students. She has a gift.

Terry – Nice.

John – I have to help Pam, my wife, prepare for a yard sale. Please stay in touch and let me know if you want a WordPress site. I even have an extra domain name. ? It… Not as clever as your branding was… Lol… WordPress is easy and powerful…

Terry – Sorry, my wife needs me, too, lol. Have fun, be safe.
