The Pelcarsky Puzzle

The Pelcarsky Puzzle

We theorize that Mary and Maria are probably different people; however, Marie’s records have become intertwined with Mary’s on some public family trees. We suspect the women could be sisters born 5 years apart in 1870 and 1875, respectively.

They Are Not Sisters

Our sister’s theory was wrong as both birth years apply only to Mary Pelcarsky.  The abt 1875 birthdate in the 1910 U.S. Federal Census was an estimate.  Her actual birthdate is 6 NOV 1870.

There Are Two Different Women

We were correct that there are two different women. Mary was born in 1870, and Maria Anna was born in 1927:

Mary (Pelcarsky) Elsik was born on 6 NOV 1870 in Austria (or Czechoslovakia). She married John Elsik, Sr. (1866), and they have three sons: John, Jr, Mike, and Andrew; three daughters: Mary, Annie, and Lizzie.  The source is the 1910 U.S. Census. She died 23 AUG 1936. This is my great grandparents and family.

Maria Anna Pelcarsky was born in 1927 as calculated from the Ohio Death Index; she died on 12 OCT 1983 according to the same Index;  Maria Pelcarsky married Paul Ilcik. They have a daughter Annie Ilcik. The source is the 19 JUN 1911 Marriage record of Annie Ilcik to Andrew Basala. Paul and Annie are what you and I are calling Durham Elcik’s.

The History Behind 4 Pelcarsky Marriages

Mary Pelcarsky (1870) married John Elcik, Sr. (1866). They both were born in Austria. They have three sons: John, Jr, Mike, and Andrew; three daughters: Mary, Annie, and Lizzie. This is my great grandfather and family. The source is the 1910 U.S. Census.

Maria Pelcarsky married Paul Ilcik, and they have a daughter Annie Ilcik. The source is the 19 JUN 1911 Marriage record of Annie Ilcik to Andrew Basala.

Anna “Annie” Pelcarsky (1848) married Joseph Paul Karkos (1867). She was born in Austria, and her parents were born in Slavonia. The source is the 11 APR 1921 marriage of Joseph Thomas Karkos and Mildred Aris Alexander. Other sources include the 1900 and 1920 U.S. Census.  There could be two relationships between the Pelcarsky and Karkos families. A second relationship is Annie Elcik (daughter of Mary Pelcarsky) marriage to George F. Karkos on 9 FEB 1925.

Mary Pelcarsky (1879) married Joseph Pelcarsky (1874). Both were born in Czechoslovakia. They have two sons: Joe and Edward; three daughters: Ann, Martha, and Rose. The source is the 1940 U.S. Census. There is no known relationship between Mary and the other three. I believe them to be unrelated to us.

The Preferred Spelling is Pelcarsky

  • Pelcarsky – Mothers’s maiden name, according to Annie Elcik, wife of George F. Karkos.
  • Pelcarsky – Mother’s maiden name on 19 JUN 1911 Marriage record of Annie Ilcik to Andrew Basala.

6 Alternative Spellings

The maiden name for Mary Pelcarsky is different on the following records:

  • Mary Polscoke is John Elcik’s mother on his 20 FEB 1896 birth, Maine Vital Records
  • Mary Pelchascay is John Elcik’s mother on his marriage to Mary Byrus (sic), Maine Marriage Index
  • Mary Palcsak is Mary Elcik’s mother upon her 4 OCT 1915 wedding to John Dutko, Maine Marriage Index
  • Mary Pelesaky is Michael J. Elcik’s mother on his 1 AUG 1930 marriage to Annie H. Sero, Maine Marriage Index
  • Mary Polcarski is an unknown daughter’s mother on her 29 AUG 1910 birth, Maine Vital Records

Also, there is Mary Pelchaleky (Marie Pelcarsky) married to Paul Elcik, Sr., Maine Vital Records

Postscript

Yes, this one baffled me for a long time.

Terry L. Karkos, Maine Genealogist

November 19 at 1:38 PM.

[Terry L. Karkos is a former Staff writer, a photojournalist at Sun Journal (Lewiston, Maine).  His genealogy website KarlosChronicles.com was one of the first Slovak websites I visited.  There I learned “that George F. Karkos was born in Lisbon Falls on September 11, 1899. He married Annie M. Elcik in Lisbon Falls on February 9, 1925. Annie, born in Durham, Maine, on April 10, 1905, to John and Mary (Pelcarsky) Elcik, died in Lisbon Falls on May 14, 1982. George died in Brunswick, Maine, on April 7, 1965.” Annie had a twin sister named
Elizabeth.” – Dr. John P. Elcik, IV – Editor]

John, IV – Do you know if there is a family relationship between Mary Pelcarsky (1875-1936) and Anna Pelcarsky Karkos (1877-1940? This would be the second relationship between Elcik and Karkos families as Annie M. Elcik (1905) married George F. Karkos in 1925.

Terry – No. I know Anna’s parents were Joseph Pelcarsky and Anna Belyan, though. Belyan was born c. 1848 and died in Lisbon Falls on March 1, 1938. Anna Pelcarsky was born 9-17-1877 in Parchovany, Slovakia. The funny thing is, Joseph K was 26 when he married 15-year-old Anna Pelcarsky. Wondering if it was an arranged marriage

John, IV – Thank you! This is the second time you have helped me. Years ago, when your website was active, I first learned about Annie Elcik from you. I hope you choose to bring your website back. It was well done. Warmest regards!

Terry – Working on bringing it back. I need to find a site to park it again. Thanks, John. Glad I could help

John, IV – I might be able to help. I have extra space on my SiteGround account. I could set up a WordPress site for you if you wish. Are you familiar with WordPress? Us Genealogists should stick together.

Terry – I have heard of WordPress. My brother in Utah sent me a site to check out. I will get my site back up. Several people have been asking about it. My wife and I moved to Holbrook, AZ, last August, after selling my house closer to my Dad and siblings and their families down in Apache Jct and Gilbert. In Utah, my brother Scott, who also does genealogy, just visited Saturday, driving my Dad (83) up here from AJ. I hope you are doing well.

John, IV – I am. My wife and I are adjusting to having adult children by adopting dogs. Getting our second next Sunday.

Terry – Oh, nice! We’ve got two adult kids, one outside of Green Bay and the other at the Cape entrance in Mass. I don’t know if they have pets, but we’ve got four grandkids, one of whom is autistic.

John, IV – Our son and daughter live close to us in Fort Myers, Florida. Michelle is a Pharmacy tech and 10 minutes away. JP is a teacher and just got married. They are about 45 minutes away. I tease that they live in Canada. ?

Terry – Lol.

John, IV – My daughter in law teaches autistic and otherwise challenged students. She has a gift.

Terry – Nice.

John – I have to help Pam, my wife, prepare for a yard sale. Please stay in touch and let me know if you want a WordPress site. I even have an extra domain name. ? It… Not as clever as your branding was… Lol… WordPress is easy and powerful…

Terry – Sorry, my wife needs me, too, lol. Have fun, be safe.

Beth,
I didn’t notice. Wow. Is that a head-scratcher? I think so. I wonder what the Ilcik Elcik’s will think about that?
Yes, they both are on Facebook.  I didn’t remember doing it, but I created the MyCousins group on my Facebook account about 9 years ago. I’ll send you an invite.  Nothing much there. I posted this email because it adds a few subscribers to our list. 🙂 I had to resurrect my Facebook account for the second time to add Pam as an administrator to MyCousins. Now when I really retire from Facebook, I can still have the MyCousins group. 🙂 Once you are a member, I can make you an administrator too. Facebook gives you 30 days to change your mind about deleting. I have not lasted for 7 days. Lol.
The MyCousins group might be an alternative to MeWe. What do you think?.
Two more new developments.
  • I have Mary Anna Pelcarsky’s obituary, and she DID have a sister: Anna (Pelcarsky) Karkos.  This confirms my theory that there are two connections between the Elcik and Karkos families. I will tell Terry L. Karkos and see if this inspires him to start up his website.
  • Naria Anna Pelcarsky also used the alias Mary, which makes me feel better about our past decisions.
See the attached image for confirmation of both items.

Re: Correction?

Beth,
My family is a genealogist’s nightmare. This is what I have, which I think answers your follow-up question.
It is a good thing we have a great team working on the Elcik family tree.
The obituary for Joseph P. Elcik was probably not written by a member of the family. I’m speculating now, but I can see it happening that in interviewing one of the daughters, the writer didn’t make the connection that she was talking about her sisters and not her fathers. 🤔
First, we need to remember that Joseph has a brother, my grandfather. Second, we need to go back to one of my earliest posts. As part of my evidence for their being brothers, I reported on the practice during that time in American history of brothers using the same given names for their children.  In this case, the Elcik brothers did it and hence the confusion:
Thus, there are two Elizabeth Annie Elcik’s born just a year apart.
Elizabeth Annie Elcik (1905-1988) is the daughter of John P. Elcik, Sr. (1886-1941) and Maria Anna Pelcarsky (1870-1936). She married twice. First to Joseph Louis Turcott (1901) and second to Carroll Charles Small (1900-1956). She had five children with Charles.
Elizabeth Annie Elcik (1904-1947) is the daughter of Joseph P. Elcik (1875-1938) and Elizabeth Balnick (1870-1934). She married Melnot Frank.  I don’t think they had any children.
Undoubtedly, they played together. So, who was Elizabeth, and who was Annie? Or did they use Beth, Betsie, or Ann, Ana? Inquiring minds want to know. Lol.
And that, as they say, is my story, and I’m stuck with it. Or did I miss something?
John, IV
P.S. I forgot to mention that John Sr’s daughter is the twin of his daughter Annie. And that Annie is the Annie that married George Francis Karkos.

Deeb

Wed 1/27/2021 4:53 PM
John,
Using the American surname for Ancestry would be easier (in my opinion) for people researching the Elcik family.  It certainly would be for me.  Also, the surname’s history is a wonderful idea and helps explain the difficulty of understanding birth certificates, marriages, etc.   If Deeb Keamy hadn’t made this discovery, we probably would never know this information.  A Life Story article would be very appropriate, and I’m happy you’re writing it as I wouldn’t know where to begin!!
A little history about Deeb: his mother is Marilyn Keamy.  Her maiden name was Karkos, and I originally contacted her about the Karkos family picture of the 10 children and the mother and father sitting in chairs in front of them.  She identified everyone with a little history of them.  She’s 93 and has an amazing memory, and has become a good friend of mine recently.  She mentioned contacting her son, Deeb, as he loves Ancestry and has resources that we obviously don’t have.  I mentioned that to Charlie, and he contacted him.  You know the rest of the story.  Deeb also belongs to the HS even though he lives in MD.  He’s retired now but worked in some capacity in Washington DC.  He grew up in Lisbon Falls and has 6 siblings.
