John Elsik Had a Younger Brother Joseph

Tue, Jul 28, 2020, at 3:09 AM

Beth,

Please help me by confirming a discovery I made last night.

I think I have proof that John Elcik (Elsik), Sr., my great-grandfather, had a younger brother Joseph.

If so, this answers the question I put on the research agenda about where there siblings. There was at least one.

My evidence is in the 1910 United States Federal Census:

  • The men are just three years apart in age.
  • Both immigrated from Austria.
  • Both settled in Durham, Androscoggin, Maine.

But the clincher for me is that both men spell our surname “Elsik” for themselves while spelling their children’s names “Elcik.”

It can’t be a coincidence.

What do you think? Could Karkos also confirm for us?

Updating the 2008 Family Tree

Wed 7/29/2020 10:43 AM

Pam, Jim, Jeff, J.P., and Michelle,

My project to update the 2008 Family Tree is proceeding nicely. The Family tree now has 2,116 people, 1,130 photos, and 121 stories with 2,535 records. In addition to reaching out to you, I have been using Facebook and email to communicate with Beth Gamache and Janet (Lucas) Welsh). Beth is my cousin, Jack’s wife, and Janet also is my cousin. Both live in Maine.

There are five documents that I think are interesting, so I’m asking you to read and share them with the kids and their spouses. I have yet to add Duryea, Grap, McMahon, or Portal surnames. I would do so if I get some data from the family. Minimally, I need birthdates for grand-parents and the maiden names of the wives. Pictures are always welcome.

The focus for me began with the Elcik and McClanahan surnames. I have added Adams, Brekke, Byrus, DeRosa, Duryea, Gamache, Gruhl, Jorgenson, Karkos, Kashmer, Skillin, and Strand to get to where I am today.

Technically, this is a never-ending project, but I will let this wind down soon. If you wish to view the Family Tree or contribute or need me to resend the invitation to access, let me know.

Judy,

You are right. July 24 was the last one.

I have not taken a DNA test yet. And the one taken by my kids took so long ago is not like what can be done now.

I want to coordinate a test with John Elcik, the potential relative from New York. He isn’t ready yet. ?

I’m also waiting to hear about your August 8th event. ?

To text me, do you need a phone number? If so, 561-543-2892.

John, IV

P.S. I have ordered hearing aids.
