Joseph Elcik Joins Our Ancestry Group

Joseph – John, are your relatives from Lisbon Falls? There are not that many Elcik’s.

John – Yes. Joseph, if you are interested, I can share my research into our Elcik surname. I’ve been researching connections between two waves of immigrants in the 1880s. The families share a common heritage (Austria/Hungary/Slovakia), surname, and given names, specifically Andrew, George, James, John, Joseph, and Michael. We all settled initially in Lisbon Falls or Durham, Maine. It may not be possible to link the families with U.S. data alone, so I have expanded my search to European sources. Information is scarce, and I’m handicapped, not knowing the Slovak language. Nevertheless, I have discovered a lot and am willing to share it.

Joseph – As my father is James Elcik and was the middle child, Jack (John) passed away last year, and his younger brother Richard passed several years ago. Mother was Rose, and Father was Joseph Elcik. Unusual for myself, my mother is Slovakian and even more unique; my wife is 3/4 Slovakian. Somewhere with either my father or aunt is an Elcik family tree book. I have only seen it once. If I do come across it, perhaps I can copy and send it out.

John – Wow.

Joseph – Joseph Elcik was my grandfather..from Maine by way of Brooklyn.

John – I just researched James and his brother John for my only other New York Contact.

Joseph – James is my father, and John (Jack) was my uncle.

John – Your John J Elcik (1931)  was getting confused with John J. Elcik (194?).  John J. of Rocky Point, who recently passed.

Joseph – John J. was a retired police officer, if my memory serves.

John – Wonderful.

Joseph – Sorry, I do have to run to a meeting. I do have your email and will try to get you the family tree.

John –  May I have your email address?
Joseph – Yes, for personal use, it’s kikjo@aol.com. My phone is a little screwy today.

John – Just as well, I’m getting adjusting to new hearing aids. 🙂

Gang,

This is the information and photo I have for our Grandfather (Becky’s Great-grandfather).
I think I have that right. ?

Thanks to Beth, Jack, and Nancy I have the right photo.

My two brothers and I did not know “Zeda” married a second time to Helen Mosko. It was a second marriage for both. I would have been about 10 years old, Jim 8 years old and Jeff may or may not have been born yet.

Re: Karkos Kronicles

John, IV,

It’s interesting that you reached out to Terry L Karkos. I’ve reached out to 3 people in Lisbon Falls about the picture. The last one was just about an hour ago. She’s a neighbor of ours and her daughter babysat our children about 40 years ago. Her name is Marilyn Keamy and she said her father was Andrew Karkos. I just went to her house and dropped off the Karkos family picture plus the John S Karkos obituary I received from my friend at the HS. She’s 92, her memory is better than mine and she remembers everything about the Karkos family. I called her, told her about the picture and she proceeded to tell me stories about the 10 brothers and sisters.

I gave her 2 copies of the picture, one for her to keep and the other one she’ll write the names of the brothers and sisters and give it back to me. I’m hopeful this will solve some pieces of the puzzle. That plus your contact with Terry L Karkos is a bonus.

I’ll let you know what she says about the Karkos family picture!!

Elcik Family

Judy,

My wife Pam has over 1,000 unsorted emails, and it drives me so crazy that at least once a year, I try to help her get organized. I, on the other hand, am super organized with hundreds of folders and subfolders for email. Yes, I know there is a search tool, but I derive some perverse sense of accomplishment by keeping everything neatly organized.

I, too, would be concerned with people walking in the street. My similar pet peeve is bicycles on the sidewalk. It is dangerous. ? They sneak up on us, hearing impaired, old people, rather than ride so we could see them coming.

Your “hilly-billies” comment has me lol. Do you remember the TV show, Sanford and Son? Our personal version of their “junkyard” hubcaps on the backyard fence is the attached photo. Lol.

Our kids have grown up with the clutter and are immune to it. But Pam’s sister gets on her case. Before the virus, Kathy would spend 3 out of every 4 weeks cruising, just enough time so Pam could recover from her “mothering.” Occasionally, I do “threaten” to call the fire department (lol), which always improves things. Pam is very active with volunteer work, so the least I can do is be supportive.

Thankfully, the kid’s homes are more organized than us. My son J.P. is getting married to Ana, a kindergarten teacher, on November 1st. He, too, is a teacher (high school biology and math). They have bought a house about an hour away, and he is learning what homeownership means, i.e., cutting the grass, etc. I tease that he has moved to Canada. ? My daughter Michelle, who works at Walgreens, is an avid Disney fan, and her house, just 10 minutes away, is nicely decorated so she can display her collectibles. Kathy is about the same distance away. Having family close is a blessing.

Disney, our favorite vacation destination, is 3 hours away. Michelle and Pam will drive to and from Orlando for a day trip. The bottom line is that I’m the lazy one in the family. I encourage them to go without me. Dog sitting is my excuse. And it has been working.

I used to collect cars. Never real cars, just the diecast toys. I was the Director of Marketing for a software company misnamed CARS information systems. We had nothing to do with autos, but I decided to embrace the issue and used toy, diecast cars from Maisto as promotions. The customers loved it.

As for being lazy, it comes with retirement. My brother Jim just retired and sent me that quote about procrastination, how good it is. “It gives us something to do tomorrow and nothing to do today.” Of course, my response was that I like to say, “mañana” as it is the day that never comes. Lol.

Yes, the debates. I am ready.

Re: DNA Confusion

Mon 9/28/2020 9:38 PM

Judy,

I picked up on a possibility you mentioned in your last post.

Thus, I have been trying all afternoon and evening to get 23andMe data to Ancestry. Apparently, this is not possible.

A more positive development is my search resulted in my locating a login and password for my brother Jeff’s DNA test. What is most interesting to us is that our ancestors were not just from the Czech Republic; Poland also fits nicely into our background. We have a mix of Northwestern (49.5%) and Eastern European (41.9%) heritage. I’m attaching a copy of Jeff’s Composition Report, where it mentions Podkarpackie Voivodeship, Poland.

I’m encouraged by this. I hope you are too. ?

William B. Cizmar Joins Our Group

Mon 10/12/2020 7:26 PM

Hi John.

Glad to make your acquaintance.  Your email gave me a lot to think about.  I’ve had a helluva time sorting out the Elcik records on Ancestry.  Maybe you can help.

Beth is a great person, and I played football with Jack (and Bob, of course) at Lisbon High. Beth was a childhood friend of my wife, Sharon Tupper.  I enjoy(ed) working with Beth at the historical society.

I spent many years researching my 1st wife’s family (Wiggin).  Her mother and father both traced back to John Alden and Priscilla Mullens of the Mayflower.  Fun!  Then I took up my Mom’s family (Rioux).  They go back to French Canada in the 1670s.  Jean Riou married into the oldest families in Quebec, including the first settler family, Louis Hebert and Marie Rollet.

Thru a “gateway to royalty,” we are connected to French royalty (no kidding!)—many kings and Charlemagne, etc.  Also, Rollo the Viking and William the Conqueror.

In The Falls, the Riouxs came from the Rimouski area to work in the mills along with my German side, the Baumanns.  Four Baumann brothers and a sister (Hechtl) immigrated here.  My Father was Slovak but came from Cleveland.  The same name as the Chizmars.  It is an occupational name meaning bootmaker.  Like Cooper or Smith, families with the same name could live in adjoining towns and not be related.  In Slovak, a C was written with a squiggle that gave it a ch sound.  Immigrants to the US could take their choice of spelling or sound.  My father was a marine guard at the Brunswick NAS when my Mom met him.  He had been at Guadalcanal.

Currently, I am trying to collect data on all people with a record of involvement with Lisbon.  A seemingly endless task.

A fellow gave a talk at the historical society and is a resource for Slovak info.  His name Deeb Keamy and his email are deebmeanswolf@aol.com.  You might contact him.

I will see if what you sent me helps me with the Elciks.  Expect questions.
