Re: 45 Davis Street

Mon 8/17/2020 11:06 PM

Beth,

Thank you for clarifying Lisbon Falls. I was getting confused.

I, too, like looking and have enjoyed helping our kids and Pam’s friends in their searches.

Pam will never go for it, but I follow The Tiny House movement and would love to be a DIY builder. Pam has 3 of everything, and when we can’t find 1 of the 3, we buy a 4th. ?

This is a constant source of teasing between us. We also have what I call the nail to wall ratio where I have attempted to limit the number of nails on a wall for pictures, etc. I never win these arguments. Technically, I have a one-foot square space in the kitchen as my official “office.” I borrow space otherwise. ?

Phone Call

Sun 9/13/2020 9:03 PM

I obviously had a great time visiting.

Normally I use a phone only to get text messages from Pam or the kids. Our conversation lasted over 2 hours and 15 minutes. They will be ribbing me about this for weeks.

?

Cousin Johnny

P.S. I can’t wait to call “Jim” Jamie.

Discussed:

  • The Warlock story was verified. In fact, Nancy would have liked to inherit her father’s power to wish away warts.
  • The Farm – Pam, and I visited the farm early in our marriage. Shortly afterward the farm was used to illustrate a book called Bird.
  • Pet cows – The cows still on the farm today are referred to as Larry’s pets by Nancy. Cute.
  • Land (growing to 150 acres) – The farm has grown since our visit.
  • Quilting – Nancy’s hobby. My Dad and Wanda were one of many to get handmade quilts.  The pictures are gorgeous.
  • Rental property, evictions – Nancy is having trouble eviting renters. The Covid virus is being used as an excuse to delay the normal process.
  • The house with an indoor pool that Pam and I remember is still standing. A relative once owned it.
  • Nancy is working as a government contractor with passports.
  • Larry is working at shipyards and using his Electrical Engineering degree.
  • Jack inherited the house at 45 Davis Street in Lisbon Falls.
  • The Coodle is the nearby swampland where we kids used to play.  I tried to buy the domain coodle.com because of fond memories.
  • I remember the Chicken Coop, but it is no more.
  • I remember the custom kitchen cabinets, which can be seen in the pictures on Zillow.
  • I asked for help with the ancestry research.
  • For the first time, I mentioned the possibility of a book based on our ancestry research.
  • Rebecca and Kippie’s story was verified.
  • Captain Elcik while not a relative doesn’t mean we don’t have Indian blood in the family.

Karkos Kronicles

Wed 9/16/2020 1:14 PM

John,

I talked with Pam, and she hasn’t shown the picture to her father yet. He’s homebound because of his recent surgery. She told me to call him between 5&7 p.m., which I’ll try to do today.

I also was very good friends with Pat Karkos in high school, and our son Derek was good friends with her son Tony. Pat passed away many years ago, but she has a sister Terry who’s still living. I’m friends with Tony’s wife on FB and will reach out to her to get Terry’s phone #, etc. Pat’s father’s name was Joe Karkos, and I have a feeling there’s a connection. I hadn’t thought about any of this before now.

Another little tidbit you will LOVE!! My friend Pat Karkos married a man from Durham, Peter Austin. Their son Tony Austin which I mentioned above, and his wife, Tracy Austin, own a restaurant on Maine St. in Lisbon Falls called Frank’s. Back in the day, the original building/business was called Kennebec’s Fruit Company. Their claim to fame was selling Moxie. Frank Annicetti Sr owned it. After he passed, his son Frank Annicetti Jr. ran the business and eventually sold the business to Tony & his wife, Tracy. Jack and many local kids would buy penny candy and then go to the Met Theater across the street to watch movies. I, being from Durham, never had the opportunity to do that because I lived too far away.

The building was getting very run down, and when Tony and Tracy bought it, they renovated it. They kept as much of the original building, inside and out, including the wood floors, metal ceiling (which is beautiful). They also kept the counter where he sold his famous Moxie, root beer floats, penny candy, etc. They painted the outside of the building and kept all the original colors. Frank’s (Tony & Tracy named the restaurant after Frank Annicett) has become the “go-to place” to go for dinner from people all over the surrounding area. Because of COVID, they were closed for a few months. The town of Lisbon agreed to “block off” a section of Maine St. for the summer and now have ten sizeable wooden picnic tables with large tents over them. People have filled the tables every day they’re open for outside dining. We’ve been there several times, and it’s wonderful.

You may remember Kennebec’s when you came to Lisbon Falls with your parents. Lisbon has a Moxie Festival every summer during a weekend in July and has done so for many years. People come from all over the country to attend. It was canceled this year because of COVID. You can Google Moxie Festival, Frank’s restaurant, and Frank Annicetti and find out more information.

I also went to Durham Elementary School with Stephen King. That’s another story for another day, and I’ll start a new email for that one if you’re interested.

My point to this whole story is: There’s a Karkos family who may now be famous living in Lisbon, except the last name is Austin.

That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it,

Beth

Lisbon Falls and Moxie

Wednesday, September 16, 2020, 1:41 PM

Beth,

My brothers and I favored the competition: Luiggi’s Pizzeria in Lewiston. Of course, we went there for Italian subs every time we came to Maine. I think they also served pizza. I never tried it. ? I never mess with the best. I go to Longhorns for chicken. For a decade, I would always choose their Chicken Fingers with Prairie Dust. Lately, I order Chicken Parmesan. I’m told they have great steaks. I will never know.

All this talk of food, particularly Moxie and Lokše, is killing me.

And as hard as it is for me to believe it, until a few weeks ago, I didn’t know there was a connection between Moxie and Lisbon Falls. Who knew? I used to order it online to prove to my friends that such an elixir, predating Coke, existed.

I told Nancy during our call that I’m always the last to know.

About a year ago, I needed help for a homeless guy who passed out on the sidewalk near a busy road. To get help, I went into a nearby business to ask someone to call 911 for me, which they did. Later that day I’m sharing the experience with Pam and Michelle, and they want to know why I didn’t use my cell phone. My response: “I thought the answer should be obvious; you can’t call 911 from a cell phone. Isn’t that why we keep our landline?” Who knew they fixed that problem? No one told me. [The worst part is the fix has been around for years. Ouch!]

Did you know that Jack’s parents were among the last people in the country to have a party phone line? True. Ask Jack.

Why Wait for the Y DNA Test?

DNA

Thu 9/17/2020 7:02 PM

Judy,

I’m attaching a report that gives you information on all the Elcik’s, both living and deceased.

As for DNA testing, I remain confused. As you say, my son’s Y DNA is the same, so there would be no reason for me to repeat his test. Isn’t the same true for my daughter’s DNA? In case you missed that, I have both reports; I’m attaching copies of both.

My rationale for being interested in the Y DNA test is that it can test two specific individuals to determine the likelihood they are related. The John Elcik in New York shares more than my surname. Our grandparents both have ties to Lisbon Falls, Maine. Except for testing two individuals for family ties, I think I have done the rest. If New York John would also take the Y DNA test, it would be an incentive for me to do so.

Again, I am still trying to educate myself.

One other reason for taking a DNA test would be to help me identify relatives in Europe. Currently, I have a brick wall for anything before my Great-grandfather arrived from Europe in 1891. To date, I don’t have reliable information on whether any of the DNA testing firms have enough participation from individuals in Europe.

I think of you as my DNA expert. Am I missing something?

Joseph Elcik Joins Our Ancestry Group

September 20, 2020, at 7:07 PM

Joseph – John, are your relatives from Lisbon Falls? There are not that many Elcik’s.

John – Yes. Joseph, if you are interested, I can share my research into our Elcik surname. I’ve been researching connections between two waves of immigrants in the 1880s. The families share a common heritage (Austria/Hungary/Slovakia), surname, and given names, specifically Andrew, George, James, John, Joseph, and Michael. We all settled initially in Lisbon Falls or Durham, Maine. It may not be possible to link the families with U.S. data alone, so I have expanded my search to European sources. Information is scarce, and I’m handicapped, not knowing the Slovak language. Nevertheless, I have discovered a lot and am willing to share it.

Joseph – As my father is James Elcik and was the middle child, Jack (John) passed away last year, and his younger brother Richard passed several years ago. Mother was Rose, and Father was Joseph Elcik. Unusual for myself, my mother is Slovakian and even more unique; my wife is 3/4 Slovakian. Somewhere with either my father or aunt is an Elcik family tree book. I have only seen it once. If I do come across it, perhaps I can copy and send it out.

John – Wow.

Joseph – Joseph Elcik was my grandfather..from Maine by way of Brooklyn.

John – I just researched James and his brother John for my only other New York Contact.

Joseph – James is my father, and John (Jack) was my uncle.

John – Your John J Elcik (1931)  was getting confused with John J. Elcik (194?).  John J. of Rocky Point, who recently passed.

Joseph – John J. was a retired police officer, if my memory serves.

John – Wonderful.

Joseph – Sorry, I do have to run to a meeting. I do have your email and will try to get you the family tree.

John –  May I have your email address?
Joseph – Yes, for personal use, it’s kikjo@aol.com. My phone is a little screwy today.

John – Just as well, I’m getting adjusting to new hearing aids. 🙂
