Now I Understand

I changed Elizabeth and Mary to Joseph’s daughters rather than his sisters.  The birthdates didn’t make sense before, and now they do.  Also, brothers naming their children the same names makes sense.  I remember when Eugene Elcik was here, and he mentioned the “other” Elcik family from Durham with the 3 girls.  He didn’t remember the father’s name, but it had to be Joseph.  That’s what makes this whole thing extremely confusing.
 
I read your recent emails and what you’re doing is beyond anything I can or understand how to do.  I applaud you for what you’re doing.
 
I belong to My Heritage as well as Ancestry and plan to renew them when the time comes.  My Heritage has different hints and search engines.  I spent a lot of time on there at the beginning and eventually switched over to Ancestry.  I get emails all the time from My Heritage about matches, and so far, I have them in a separate folder.  I never started the Elcik family tree, and I want to do that.  I believe I can create a GEDCOM to transfer what I already have on Ancestry.  Correct me if I’m wrong, please.

Slovakia was part of the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary but was administered by Hungary. The Ilčík family was from Parchovany, Slovakia. In the latter part of the 19th century, the priests in Parchovany kept Hungarian sacramental records. In Hungarian, the surname came before the personal name. I found baptismal records for the following children of Ilycsik Pál (Pavol Ilčík in Slovak) and Pelcsarszki Mária (Mária Pelčarská in Slovak):

  • Ilycsik János (Ján Ilčík in Slovaki) baptized Mar. 10, 1885; as John P. Elcik died Sep. 5, 1962 at Lewiston
  • Ilycsik Mária (Mária Ilčík in Slovak) baptized May 18, 1889
  • Ilycsik Anna (Anna Ilčík in Slovak) baptized Sep. 22, 1891

(The Parchovany baptismal records are digitized up to 1895, but Pavol Ilčík was another one of their children, as confirmed by his obituary, which gives his date of birth as February 15, 1896. As Paul Elcik, he died Dec. 23, 1970, at Lewiston.

I found the following baptismal records in Parchovany for children of Ilscik János (Ján Ilčík in Slovak) and Erzsébet Bárán (Alžbeta Baran in Slovak):

  • Ilcsik György (Juraj Ilčík in Slovak) baptized Apr. 20, 1866
  • Ilcsik János (Ján Ilčík in Slovak) baptized Dec. 28, 1867; as John P. Elcik died May 24, 1941 at Lisbon Falls
  • Ilcsik Anna (Anna Ilčík in Slovak) baptized Jan. 31, 1870
  • Ilcskik József (Jozef Ilčík in Slovak) baptized Nov. 26, 1873; as Joseph P. Elcik died May 31, 1838

Wow! I am very excited to delve into this information—another goldmine. There is no way I can ever thank you enough for all you have done. You, Earl, and Beth are a dynamic trio.
It will take me time to realize the full significance of all this—several initial thoughts.
  1. I think this totally answers the Elcik, Elsik, Ilcik relations puzzle. Almost unbelievable…
  2. It also solves the puzzle of the mysterious Elizabeth Baron. I have a Social Security source document for her, but until now could only guess who she might be.
I’m going to copy Earl and Beth on this. Earl gave you a great lead, but your follow-up was a hit out of the ballpark.
Beth has been struggling as much as I with these puzzles. I think she will be as over the moon with joy as I.
